About the Position:The Watervliet Arsenal is an Army-owned and-operated manufacturing center located in NY. It is the oldest, continuously active arsenal in the U.S having begun operations in 1813. Today it is relied upon by U.S. and foreign militaries to produce the most advanced, high powered weaponry for cannon, howitzer, and mortar systems. The Arsenal is the only location in the DoD that has a weapons research facility(Benét Laboratories) collocated with a manufacturing facility (Arsenal)

Duties

Help
  • Receive mechanical and technical instructions through production shop assignments
  • Through industrial shop assignments, together with detailed instructions by shop instructors and/or senior craftsmen, is taught the set-up and operation of machine tools.
  • Is temporarily assigned to various other technical and administrative departments to experience the full range of training scheduled within the plant.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Required to sign a continued Service Agreement to continue employment within the Department of Defense (DoD) for 3 years following the completion of the apprenticeship.
  • Persons who have reached the journeyman level in the Machinist trade or have completed a 4-year formal apprenticeship program are not eligible.
  • Selectee will be required to sign a Watervliet Arsenal Apprentice Program Agreement indicating the terms and conditions of employment and training.
  • This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
  • Due to the nature of this position, employees may be required to work both planned and unscheduled overtime.
  • This position requires the employee to use personal protective equipment provided by the employer.
  • Must meet the basic educational requirements (General Educational Development (GED) diploma accepted or higher education) by November 2018 to be enrolled in an established degree program that will be taught at a local college or training institution.
  • Attendance for the academic courses will be off post, on the apprentice's own time, without compensation. Apprentice is responsible for his/her own transportation.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

There is no specific length of training or experience required. However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Your resume must reflect the ability to do the work of a Machinist Apprentice without more than normal supervision which includes the possession of mechanical aptitude for understanding and using machines or tools; and willingness to learn. Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating. To meet the basic eligibility, you must receive at least two points on the screen-out element indicated above and must have an average of two points on all the job elements listed below.

PHYSICAL EFFORT: Requires standing, stooping, bending and reaching. Frequent handling of objects weighing up to 10 pounds and occasionally objects weighing as much as 40 pounds, however, hoists, hand trucks, lifts, and other workers are available to assist with heavier items.

WORKING CONDITIONS: Works in a well lit, heated, and ventilated shop with concrete floors. Exposed to dust from grinding, oil from machines, dirt, heat, noise, and fumes. Subject to the hazards of burns from hot metal chips, dust in lungs, cuts, bruises, and injuries to the hands from the use of machine and hand tools, skin irritation from contact with coolants, lubricants, and abrasive compounds, and subject to strains from infrequent moving, lifting, and handling of heavy items. Wears safety glasses, shoes, and other safety apparel and equipment as required.
