Summary

The staff Speech-Language Pathologist position is located in the Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology Service of the VA Northern California Health Care System (VANCHCS). The primary site for Service delivery is in a veteran's home or other residence such as a care facility. Some clinical activities may be completed via telehealth and some patient visits may be in person on the Mather campus. Some of the duties may include but are not limited to the following:

Duties

Help

The incumbent is responsible for independent diagnostic assessment and evaluation of cases that are referred to the Speech-Language Pathology Section without limitation as to difficulty or complexity. The incumbent will be responsible to conduct interviews with the patients and appropriate family members or friends; and to select, administer and interpret the diagnostic test results necessary to detect and evaluate the presence of a speech, language, voice, fluency, communicative, cognitive, and/or swallowing disorder.
The incumbent is responsible for (1) assessing patient conditions from examination, observation and consultation with other members of an interdisciplinary health care team; (2) utilizing diagnostic and evaluative procedures and techniques consistent with contemporary speech-language pathology practice, (3) developing an appropriate plan of care and delivering treatment as designed and consistent with principles of evidence-based practice, (4) documenting evaluation and treatment actions and outcomes in appropriate formats in a timely manner, in accordance with facility policy, and completing all related administrative tasks, and (5) reporting the findings to Veterans and their families, and to professional colleagues.
The incumbent is responsible for planning, conducting, coordinating, and monitoring the effectiveness and clinical outcomes of patient-centered treatment and rehabilitative services to maximize and restore physical and social functioning to the greatest extent possible. Treatment may be provided to individuals or to a group of Veterans, led either by the incumbent independently or by the incumbent in collaboration with other related professionals.
The incumbent serves as a consultant to other facility personnel involving the most difficult and complex cases and is a recognized subject matter expert on matters related to speech, language, voice, fluency, cognitive-communicative disorders, and swallowing disorders. The incumbent will perform other duties as assigned.

NOTE: A current, valid, unrestricted driver's license and the ability to operate a GSA vehicle for community home visits is required for this position.




Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 8:00 am to 4:30 pm

Qualifications

Basic Requirements:

  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • English language proficiency: Must be proficient in spoken and written English.
  • Education: Must hold a master's degree or its equivalent in speech-language pathology or communication disorders from an accredited college or university. "Accredited" means a college or university recognized by a regional accreditation organization and a speech-language pathology academic program recognized by the Council on Academic Accreditation of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA). (Note: Must submit copies of transcripts with application.
  • Licensure: For GS-12 and above must hold a full, current, and unrestricted license in a State, Territory, Commonwealth, or the District of Columbia to practice speech pathology. (Note: Must submit copy of license with application.)
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Grade Determinations:

GS-12:
Licensure: The incumbent must hold a full, current, and unrestricted license in a State, Territory, Commonwealth, or the District of Columbia.
Education and Experience: Completion of 1 year of professional experience comparable to the next lower grade (GS-11) and possession of a full, current and unrestricted license to practice speech-language pathology. In addition candidate must have demonstrated experience meeting the following Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

1. Ability to develop coherent treatment strategies
2. Ability to incorporate new clinical procedures sufficient to perform clinical services independently
3. Ability to conduct assessments, provide treatment interventions, and provide consultation to other health care professionals
4. Knowledge of instrumentation used in speech-language pathology
5. Knowledge of principles and techniques used in alternative and augmentative communication (AAC) systems, diagnosis and treatment of dysphagia, and cognitive-communication disorders
6. Knowledge of principles and techniques used in voice disorders including alaryngeal and trach/ventilator-dependent patients
7. Ability to perform functions associated with contemporary speech-language pathology practice

Physical Requirements: Light lifting and carrying, up to 15 pounds. May be reaching above shoulders. Requires walking standing, hearing (aid permitted), and repetitive computer use.
