Duties

Help
  • Leads the development and maintenance of space weather models for predicting space radiation environment in low Earth orbit, near Earth orbit, and exploration missions.
  • Develops innovative partnerships with space weather modelers and NASA centers to develop operational forecasts and concepts or operations to minimize astronaut exposures to solar particle events.
  • Designing, developing, testing, verifying, analyzing, and providing engineering recommendations for elements in their discipline of expertise under the guidance of a technical discipline expert or lead.
  • Provides technical guidance in both fundamental research and operational development of space weather models and tools for space radiation environment characterization and forecasting.
  • Leads the Integrated Solar Energetic Proton Event alert and warning system project element within Radworks that is developing models for use in exploration mission planning.
  • Liaison to NASA's Community Coordinated Modeling Center at Goddard Space Flight Center.
  • Participates in and is a presenter in national and international seminars and symposia relating to fields of expertise in scientific technology or research.
  • Provides technical guidance to real-time flight control team operational support for the International Space Station/Orion/Gateway via support provided by the Space Radiation Analysis Group.
  • Development, maintenance, and implementation of processes and infrastructure related to the training and certification of Space Environment Officer console support personnel.
  • Functions as part of a larger team to define and mitigate the risks associated with human exposure to the space radiation environment.
  • Represents the Space Radiation Analysis Group, Johnson Space Center, and Human Health and Performance Directorate at program boards and panels to present radiation requirements and related change requests and issues.
  • Serves as an advisor to senior scientists, engineers, management, related organizations, or contractor personnel, giving authoritative technical advice and evaluation on Space Radiation Discipline.
  • Prepares policy development, requirements analysis and definition, technical evaluations, and makes human and systems integration recommendations to management.
  • Identifies, investigates, and reports hardware, procedural, and documentation problems, anomalies, and discrepancies, and monitors corrective action.

Qualifications

Applicant must have one year of specialized experience at the next lower grade, which has equipped the applicant with the particular competencies needed to successfully perform the duties of the position described above.

Specialized experience is defined as professional working experience that included the following:

- Knowledge of fundamental mechanisms responsible for imparting energy to ambient particles near the Sun and in interplanetary space, including coronal mass ejection and corotating interaction region-driven shocks, magnetic reconnection, electromagnetic fields and waves, and turbulence, as well as the processes responsible for the dissemination of these particles as they travel through the heliosphere.
- Competence in scientific research using theory, state-of-the-art numerical models, and validation through comparison with ground-based observations and data from solar and heliospheric missions.
- Knowledge of the concepts and principles of engineering to resolve novel or obscure problems, extend and modify techniques, develop new approaches that guide other engineers who solve a variety of technical problems, and apply new, innovative, or experimental engineering theories, developments, or practices to problems or studies not susceptible to treatment by acceptable methods.
- Knowledge of space weather fundamentals, space environments, space vehicles, human space flight operational and training requirements, as well as their respective impacts and constraints on human equipment design.
- Knowledge and experience in engineering and science and program planning to address issues with design, development, evaluation, and certification testing of discipline specific components, systems and hardware.
- Ability to problem solve and create engineering solutions to field problems and develop engineering requests for systems improvements in areas such as operations and human and systems performance.
- Ability to communicate effectively with professional and non-professional personnel at all technical and managerial levels in both oral and written form.

Education

A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major study in engineering, physical science, mathematics, life sciences, computer science, or other field of science.

Degrees in engineering technology are not considered to be qualifying for this position.

Education completed outside of the United States must be deemed equivalent to that gained in conventional/accredited U.S. education programs to be acceptable for Federal employment. Most foreign education is not accredited by an accrediting body that is recognized by the Secretary of the U.S. Department of Education.
