The USGS Earthquake and Landslide Hazards Programs provide scientific expertise in response to selected hazard crises abroad, and support projects for capacity-building and disaster risk reduction in developing nations. Work is managed through an Earthquake Disaster Assistance Team (EDAT) in partnership with United States Agency International Development (USAID)’s Office of Foreign Disaster Assistance (OFDA).
As a Physical Scientist within the Earthquake Hazard Program (EHP), some of your specific duties will include:
Serving as USGS manager, coordinator, and spokesperson for the EDAT, in order to provide programmatic and logistical support for hazard response and capacity-building projects, including developing, managing, tracking, and reporting in coordination with applicable USGS science centers and programs.
Forging and maintaining relationships and collaborations among the USGS, OFDA, and other federal and international partners, in order to conduct joint science and monitoring projects, provide trainings, deliver science and information, and foster productive relationships with scientific counterparts.
Collaborating with OFDA’s Geoscience Advisor on selected projects in support of OFDA’s mission.
Analyzing USGS and partner agency datasets, products, and capabilities, in order to assist, complement, and inform risk reduction efforts in areas such as earthquake or landslide science, remote sensing, civil or geotechnical engineering, and/or disaster risk reduction.
Fieldwork may expose incumbent to potentially dangerous situations and exposure to moderate discomfort from extremes such as heat, cold, and inclement weather, and stressful social situations, particularly on trips in response to natural hazard crises and events.

In addition to the basic education requirements, you must have 1-year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level in the Federal service. Examples include:
One year of appropriate professional experience that is in or directly related to the duties of the position to be filled is qualifying if it is equivalent to at least the GS-12 level in the Federal service, and if it equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position.
Examples of GS-12 level work might include: 1) Developing, managing, and/or participating in projects that involve international or domestic hazard response and/or capacity-building; 2) coordinating or co-leading scientific or engineering groups or activities that involve multiple agencies or institutions; 3) participating in technical teams responding to hazard crises; 4) developing and delivering training on physical science or engineering, disaster response, or disaster risk reduction; 5) analyzing and interpreting remotely sensed geospatial data relevant to natural hazards. The work would have involved the application of knowledge and techniques from a field such as earthquake or landslide science, seismology, geotechnical or structural engineering, geographic information systems, meteorology, or geophysics.
