This position is part of the Research Services, National Archives and Records Administration. As an Archives Technician, you will be involved in a project that is expected to last anywhere from 13 months to 36 months.

This is a TERM appointment with an initial employment period of 13 months. The appointment may be extended up to a maximum of three years without further competition.

Duties

As an ARCHIVES TECHNICIAN, GS-1421-6, your typical work assignments may include the following under supervision:

  • Arrangement: Performs detailed and relatively difficult arrangement work after the general plan of arrangement has been approved by supervisor. Studies documents for identification and verifies them against appropriate finding aids to determine the correct arrangement and detects missing and misfired items and enclosures that have been separated from covering communications. As requested, takes corrective action where discrepancies occur and prepares appropriate cross-references for records previously filed in a different series or record group. Prepares or assists in the preparation of location registers to inventoried records. According to established criteria, reviews records so as to perfect their arrangement. This task can involve replacement of worn out folders, placing disarranged folders in proper order, etc. Occasionally supervises laborers or archives aides who are packing, shelving, or moving records; preparing label lists; or affixing labels to containers and folders.
  • Preservation and Rehabilitation: In connection with other duties assumes immediate responsibility for accomplishing particular repair and rehabilitation projects with or without the aid of other archives technicians, but does not make decisions that call for professional knowledge of repair and rehabilitation processes or of value or probable activity of records. Such projects involve selection, preparation, transmittal, receipt-back inspection, and return to file.

Qualifications

You may qualify at the GS-06 level, if you fulfill the following qualification requirements:

A. One-half year of graduate level education (9 semester hours or 13.5 quarter hours) in an accredited educational institution in a related field, such as archival science or library science may be considered as qualifying for this position. The education must demonstrate the competencies necessary to do the work of the position; OR

B. One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level GS-05. Specialized experience that demonstrates your ability performing preservation actions on archival records, studying documents for identification and verifying them against appropriate finding aids to determine the correct arrangement, and following established regulations and policies concerning the protection and use of records, OR

C. A combination of education and experience as listed above.

Combination of Experience and Education: A combination of experience and graduate education from an accredited educational institution may be used to meet the total requirements for this position.
