Duties

Help

Organizes and arranges a wide variety of materials that comprise a specialized archival category. Participates in preliminary review and handling of newly acquired papers or assigned collections. Examines and identifies material for special arrangement or disposition. Undertakes special projects in order to prepare archival material for public use. Writes reports to identify and resolve problems relating to collections or processing activities.

Participates in preliminary review of archival collections to determine physical condition and recommend treatment. Identifies and labels material for conservation and inventory control, including in automated systems. Performs complex support work in a specialty area of collection security and preservation, such as identifying and securing material for shipment, transfer or disposition, housing and sleeving rare items, and marking material for special identification or handling. Supports collections security by filling occasional office duties, such as monitoring stack areas and helping greet visitors and callers in reception areas. 

Researches, evaluates, and documents materials that make up specialized archival categories, including collections of personal papers and organization records. Compiles and organizes information for accession and bibliographic records. Prepares collection-related statistical information. Identifies collection material and applies descriptive information to document cases and folders according to division guidelines and standards. Prepares finding aids and other descriptive compilations in automated format. Reviews preliminary container lists to ensure accuracy and completeness. Undertakes projects that facilitate access to collections, including preparation of manuals and codification of procedures of descriptive data.

Qualifications

Applicants must have had progressively responsible experience and training sufficient in scope and quality to furnish them with an acceptable level of the following knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the duties of the position without more than normal supervision.

Knowledge of archival techniques and procedures.**

Ability to utilize integrated library systems and other technologies.**

Ability to perform preservation duties.

Ability to organize and execute work.

Ability to communicate effectively other than in writing.

Although it is the Library's policy to afford the maximum pay benefit to employees when setting rates of pay, a new appointee who has had no previous Federal service will generally be paid the minimum step of the grade.
