Help

The Pipefitter (Boiler Operator):

  • Operates, maintains and repairs the Academy’s three (3) boiler plants which consist of two (2) low pressure (15psi) boilers, two (2) high pressure temperature hot water fire tube boilers and two (2) low pressure sectional boilers and associated auxiliary equipment. In addition, is responsible for installing, modifying and repairing high and low pressure piping systems and equipment.
  • Is engaged in plumbing and pipefitting repair, renovation, and maintenance of building’s steam and hot water plant operations. Responsible for maintaining and repair of cold, hot and circulatory water lines, sewer disposal plant, and drains, swimming pools, galley equipment, fire hydrants, installation of new basin, urinals, bowls, repairs to thermostatic mixing valves and flushometers, installation of water lines and pressure reducing valves.
  • Analyzes or tests feed water, boiler water, and condensate using standard chemical tests.

NOTE: The boiler plants run on a 7-day shift plan. May be assigned to a specific shift or alternate, working on all shifts, including weekends.

This position is ideal for a highly motivated, experienced professional who has experience as a Pipefitter (Boiler Operator) at the Journeyman level performing plumbing and pipefitting repair, renovation, design, and maintenance of building’s steam and hot water plant operations.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

  • SELECTIVE SERVICE: Males born after 12/31/1959 must be registered for the Selective Service.
  • BACKGROUND INVESTIGATION: A complete background security investigation before appointment is required.
  • PHYSICAL: Applicants for this position must pass a pre-employment medical examination.
  • SHIFTS: This position requires working on various shifts including Saturdays, Sundays and holidays as necessary, and is subject to 24-hour call in emergency situations.
  • DRIVER'S LICENSE: Must posses a current and valid state operator's motor vehicle license and an acceptable driving record.
  • PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Frequent stays in uncomfortable positions while working in manholes, crawl spaces, excavations, over hot water tanks and boilers, and around steam pipes. Repairs and installations are made from ladders, scaffolding and platforms, and where systems and equipment worked on are in hard to reach places. Frequently handles, lifts, carries and set up parts and equipment that weigh up to 50 pounds. Occasionally lifts and carries items that weigh over 50 pounds.
  • WORKING ENVIRONMENT: Work is frequently performed in damp and wet areas, requiring rain gear, boots and gloves. Frequently works in emergencies in rain, snow and other poor weather conditions. The work may be dirty and greasy, and sometimes the required installations and repairs are in areas where bad smelling fumes are present.  Exposed to the possibility of cuts, bruises, scrapes and burns from hot metal surfaces and burns from steam and hot water. Sometimes exposed to solvents, oils, chemicals and other irritating substances.
  • DEU REQUIREMENTS: Applicants selected under delegated examining procedures may be required to successfully complete a one-year probationary period (unless already completed).

Qualifications

Qualifications for the position are based on the training, experience, or other requirements that determine which applicants would be able to perform satisfactorily in the position to be filled.

Applicants must have experience at the journey level as an Pipefitter without normal supervision to install, maintain, troubleshoot, repair, modify, high and low pressure systems and equipment such as steam heating equipment, flash and expansion tanks, condensate, vacuum and circulation pumps.

For the Wage Grade 10, to qualify your application will be rated on the following job elements:

  • The ability to do the work of the position without more than normal supervision.
  • Knowledge of equipment, assembly, installation and repair.
  • Technical Practices (theoretical, precise, artistic).
  • Ability to interpret instructions, specifications, etc. (including blueprint reading).
  • Trade Practices (Measurement and Layout).
  • Ability to use and maintain tools and equipment.
  • Troubleshooting.
