As a Student Trainee (Rangeland), GS-0499-3/4, your typical work assignments and/or responsibilities may include, but are not limited to the following:

As a student trainee, you will:
Serve in a developmental role performing technical and basic professional duties pertaining to range management work such as inspecting allotments before and after grazing session for evidence of noncompliance with basic requirement of grazing permits such as detecting instances of grazing trespassing on Indian lands.
Become familiar with conditions of water developments and proper distribution and movement of livestock to assist and participate in determining the proper steps to protect the range and other resources.
Receive orientation pertaining to the organizational structure of the Bureau and its methods of working with rangeland management professionals in performing technical and basic professional duties pertaining to range management work.
Receive other assignments to broaden knowledge of BIA activities in the related program functions, such as timber, fire, wildlife and recreation.

The full performance level of this position is GS-4. Qualifications

Applicants must either be enrolled in an accredited college or university and seeking a bachelor's degree or higher that is directly related to the program area (see education section below) OR students who have not declared yet or is seeking a degree that is unrelated to the program area, may be hired under the Pathways Internship Program. However, their continued participation and employment is contingent upon them obtaining the educational eligibility requirements for the program they were hired under within a prescribed timeframe.

Basic qualification requirements include:
-For the GS-3 grade level: Completion of 1 academic year of post-high school study.
-For the GS-4 grade level: Completion of 2 academic years of post-high school study or associate's degree.

NOTE DOCUMENTATION OF STUDENT ENROLLMENT STATUS: If you do not have a transcript because you are a first year or a returning student, you must upload and attach a copy of your degree plan/curriculum and any other acceptable proof to verify currently accepted or enrolled. Examples of acceptable proof are enrollment course schedule or plan, registration of current course work, advisor approved degree checklist, or letter of acceptance that is on college or university official letter head.

NOTE: IF YOUR SCHOOL'S DEFINITION OF ONE YEAR OF UNDERGRADUATE STUDY IS LESS THAN 30 SEMESTER HOURS (OR 45 QUARTER HOURS) YOU MUST PROVIDE PROOF.

Education

Degree program areas include natural resources management, geography, agricultural engineering, agricultural economics, animal husbandry, animal science, horticulture, rangeland management, soil conservation or science, environmental sciences, fisheries and wildlife biology, forestry and other related biological sciences.

For graduate education, one academic year of graduate education is considered to be the number of credits hours your graduate school has determined to represent one academic year of full-time study. Such study may have been performed on a full-time or part-time basis. If you cannot obtain your graduate school's definition of one year of graduate study, 18 semester hours (or 27 quarter hours) should be considered as satisfying the requirement for one year of full-time graduate study.

If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet the qualification requirements, you must send a Certificate of Foreign Equivalency with your transcript in order to receive credit for that education which shows the education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university. Additional information

Students will be placed on LWOP while attending school or completing academic requirements. The LWOP is a temporary nonpay and nonduty status (or absence from a prescheduled tour duty), which is granted based upon a student's educational needs (5 CFR 630.101).

Student may be required as an incidental duty to operate a government-owned or leased motor vehicle, in the performance of duties; therefore, a valid driver's license is required. Incumbent must have a safe driving record within the three-year period immediately preceding submittal of GSA Form 3607 and be able to meet the safe driving requirements of Indian Affairs.

Students will be required to provide a copy of up-to-date transcripts and upcoming class schedule (unofficial may be acceptable) at the end/beginning of each academic semester for verification of enrollment and academic standing as proof of continuing eligibility for participation in the Pathways Program.

An Intern Not To Exceed (NTE) appointment may be extended in increments of up to one year. There is no limit on the number of extensions that may be granted, as long as the Intern NTE maintains eligibility for her or his appointment by:
-Continuing to demonstrate progress toward the successful completion of her or his academic program within the timeframe indicated in the Participant Agreement;
-Remaining a student in good academic standing; and
-Receiving a positive recommendation and/or evaluation to justify the extension from the Pathways Program manager.

The student of this position may be noncompetitively converted to a term or career conditional position upon successful completion of the Pathways Internship Program requirements. In order to be eligible for a non-competitive conversion, you must:
-Complete at least 640 hours of work experience in accordance with 5 CFR 362
-Have completed their academic degree requirements with at least a 2.0 career (cumulative) GPA

-Received a "Fully Successful" or above performance evaluation, and favorable recommendation from your Pathways Program manager/supervisor
-Be converted timely within conversion period from when the degree is conferred (120 days)

-Received favorable recommendation from supervisor for non-competitive conversion "appointment"
