The USGS Northern Prairie Wildlife Center is seeking biological science technicians for the 2019 summer field season of the Annual Brome Adaptive Management project.  The GG-05 positions vary in length (14-26 weeks) and beginning/ending dates (outside range May 15-November 15, 2019) depending on position and funding availability.  The Annual Brome Adaptive Management project is building a structured decision making framework for invasive and native vegetation management in seven National Park Service units of the northern Great Plains.

As a BIOLOGICAL SCIENCE TECHNICIAN (FIELD ASSISTANT) within the NORTHERN PRAIRIE WILDLIFE CENTER, some of your specific duties will include:

  • Collecting data related to cover, composition, and diversity of northern mixed-grass prairie vegetation.
  • Measuring plant cover and density by species; recording species richness; and measuring litter depth and mass
  • Acts daily as a member of a field crew and performs correct use of field forms and techniques, organizes field equipment, confirms quality and accuracy of data, and alerts supervisor to procedural, technical, and logistical problems.
  • Applies and adapts existing methods to accomplish project objectives
  • Cares for and maintains equipment
  • Enters data into an established database; checks and corrects data entry
  • Maintains data and protocol consistency.
  • Operates a government vehicle. As part of the required duties for this job position, the employee will be routinely required to drive up 300 miles/ day to remote areas to conduct field work. This work is routinely conducted as a solo operation so the employee will be required to operate a government vehicle to complete these duties.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Field work will be strenuous at times.  Position demands hiking moderate distances in varying temperatures, carrying equipment, and lifting objects weighing up to 20 pounds.  Field work is extensive, and may require long hours of walking, bending, squatting, and/or kneeling; extensive exposure to sun and insects and potential exposure to bison and rattlesnakes; and walking over rough terrain in grasslands. Most office work (data management and computer use) is performed while seated, although occasional periods of standing, walking, bending, or carrying light objects are required.

Qualifications


In order to qualify at the GG-5 level, you must meet one of the following: --Nine months of field party experience. Field party experience includes activities associated with making and recording geologic, hydrologic, or topographic field observations; collecting geologic, biological, or water samples for laboratory analysis; applying accepted data collection techniques and methods in the performance of field work in support of scientific investigations; and using a variety of surveying instruments and electronic or mechanical instrumentation in the making and recording of field measurements and observations designed to collect data for geologic physical science investigations. Only time actually spent in the field can be credited when qualifying individuals under the field party experience option.

*OR* --Three years sub-professional experience. Sub-professional experience is defined as technical work performed in support of field or laboratory investigations relating to the biological sciences, physical sciences, or closely related disciplines, which provided basic knowledge or skills in gathering, recording, and assembling scientific or engineering data; using scientific instruments to measure angles, degrees weights, strengths, intensities, etc.; setting up and operating test apparatus, and manipulating quantitative data. Experience may include assisting professional employees in such duties as calibrating and operating measuring instruments, mixing solutions, making chemical analyses, setting up and operating test apparatus, and compiling and processing scientific data. Experience as a laboratory mechanic or in a trade or craft may be credited as experience when the work was performed in close association with physical or biological scientists or other technical personnel and provided a good working knowledge of appropriate scientific principles, methods, and techniques.

*OR* --Three years college study related to biology plus 3 months of lab or field work experience. Satisfactory completion of a field course of study may be substituted for the 3 months of field and/or laboratory experience.
