Summary

The Food Service Worker will be working at the VA Medical Center in Lees, MA. This position is located in the Nutrition and Food Service (NFS) section. The Food Service Worker performs duties that require proficiency in special procedures and a broad knowledge of service operations, such as food preparation, dishwashing, dry and refrigerated storage and food and beverage serving.

Duties

Help

  • In the serving area, assembles and checks tray for completeness, attractiveness, and for proper items on the prescribed diet.
  • Answers general questions for patients on diets.
  • Follows precise directions in preparing nourishment and special feedings.
  • Weigh, measure, and assemble ingredients for regular and modified menu items.
  • Takes nourishment inventories, replaces expired bulk items and labels and distributes individual nourishment.
  • Apply knowledge of general sanitation principals, applying special sanitary techniques in preparing formulas and tube feedings.
  • Weigh and measure food items and recipe ingredients.
  • Determine the quantities of ingredients to prepare required yields.
  • Assemble, label and arrange completed recipe items in preparation for use by cooks.
  • Portion foods for distribution and service.
  • Set up service lines.
  • Prepare uncooked food items such as sandwich fillings, puree bread, puree fruit and dysphagia fruit, etc.
  • Sort, wash, peel and cut fresh fruits and vegetables.
  • Knowledge of acceptable temperature ranges.
  • May be assigned to unload delivery trucks.
  • Utilizes computer software to process and maintain records of diets, tray tickets, supplemental feedings, food preferences and standing orders.
  • Keeps working areas clean and orderly.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned
Work Schedule: 5 days per week 2 days off (Rotating shifts to include weekends and holidays based on the agency needs) "When Applicable employee's will receive Night differential, Sunday pay, Holiday pay"

Qualifications

PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK CONDITIONS: Work involves light to moderate physical effort. Continuous standing and walking and frequent stooping, reaching, pushing, pulling and bending. May be required to perform heavy work, such as scouring and scrubbing large size cooking utensils and pushing heavy carts and trucks in unloading, storing and delivering supplies. They also may be required to work on ladders and use powered cleaning equipment. They frequently lift or move objects weighing up to 40 pounds.

The work is performed in kitchen areas where the steam and heat from cooking and dishwashing equipment often cause uncomfortably high temperatures and humidity. The working area is well lighted but usually noisy from food service activities, and there is danger of slipping on floors where food or beverages have been dropped. Food service workers are regularly exposed to hot liquids, sharp cutting blades, hot working surfaces and extreme temperature changes when entering walk-in refrigeration or freezing units.

Receiving Service Credit for Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee.
