NOTE: This is a TEMPORARY appointment (not-to-exceed 1 year). This appointment may be renewed for additional service in accordance with Agency needs for 1 additional year. Temporary positions offer health insurance (if the employee is expected to work at least 130 hours per month for at least 90 days) but do not offer life insurance or retirement benefits and may be terminated at any time before the expiration date. The appointment to a Temporary position does not confer eligibility for promotion or reassignment to other positions or the ability to be non-competitively converted to permanent.

Major duties and responsibilities include (but are not limited to)

  • Cleans serving areas by sweeping and mopping floors, cleaning/sanitizing work surfaces, and other foodservice equipment, such as refrigerators, toaster, and coffee machines;
  • Cleans production equipment including steam jacketed kettles, tilt skillets, etc. using appropriate and safe sanitation techniques;
  • Loads and operates dishwashers and cart washing station;
  • Performs necessary preventative maintenance on equipment;
  • Transports tray carts to wards and individually delivers trays directly to the patient's bedside or assists patients with transport of their meal trays;
  • Sets-up serving areas with hot and cold foods, keeping foods appropriately stocked during meal service;
  • Identifies discrepancies between the prescribed diet and/or listed food allergies and the food items listed on the tray ticket;
  • Assembles a variety of items while working in cold food preparation and nourishment area;
  • Make cold sandwiches using prepared ingredients;
Performing other duties as assigned.

Work Schedule: 11:30 am - 8 pm Works weekends and holidays.

Qualifications

PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK CONDITIONS: The Work involves light to moderate physical effort. Continuous standing and walking and frequent stooping, reaching, pushing, pulling and bending occur daily. The incumbent may be required to perform heavy work, such as scouring and scrubbing large size cooking utensils and pushing heavy carts and trucks in unloading, storing and delivering supplies. They also may be required to work on ladders and use powered cleaning equipment. They frequently lift or move objects weighing up to 40 pounds. The work of Food Service Workers is performed in a well-lit, but hot, noisy and humid kitchen environment; subject to common kitchen hazards such as cuts and punctures from cutlery and sharp container edges, burns from hot foods and food container edges, burns from hot foods and food containers; strains from lifting bulk supplies; falls and sprains from wet surfaces; and irritations from cleaning solutions; exposure to extreme temperatures of refrigeration and freezer units as well as the general work areas. Food Services Workers are required to wear protective equipment when indicated. When working in the patient care areas they will be exposed to psychiatric patients and contagious disease. Food Service Workers must work rapidly, yet efficiently, to meet meal schedules. They must be clean and neat at all times and follow standard set for uniform compliance.

IMPORTANT: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. All experience listed on your resume must include the month and year start/end dates. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Receiving Service Credit for Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. VA may offer newly-appointed Federal employee's credit for their job-related non-federal experience or active duty uniformed military service. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave. Such credit must be requested and approved prior to the appointment date and is not guaranteed.
