Summary

This position is located in the Department of Maintenance and Repair, U.S. Merchant Marine Academy Kings Point, New York. You will serve as a troubleshooter within the Department of Public Works, performing a variety of task involved in the maintenance and repair of buildings and related structures, utilities, and grounds. You will have primary responsibility for maintenance and repair of Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems and components at the Academy.

Duties

Help

The Maintenance Mechanic (HVAC):

  • Troubleshoots equipment to determine the area of difficulty; what parts and/or materials are required; methods, techniques, and procedures to use in completing repairs.
  • Is required and responsible for responding to a wide variety of routine and emergency repairs.  Work involves installing, recognizing the causes of faulty equipment, and making repairs on a variety of systems.
  • Installs, modifies, repairs, maintains, and diagnoses trouble and makes repairs.
  • Installs, recognizes the causes of faulty equipment, and making repairs on a variety of HVAC systems. 
  • Utilizes different types of HVAC systems to condition air within a variety of structures, such as dormitories, large office buildings, electronic data processing centers, etc.
  • Reviews and interprets drawings, blueprints and manuals, as required, to determine facility/system layout and location of specific structures and fixtures and specifications.
  • Identifies and repairs the full range of problems that may occur within the grounds of the Academy.

This position is ideal for a highly motivated, Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) maintenance mechanic that has experience performing a variety of tasks involved in the maintenance and repair of administrative buildings, residences, and classrooms.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

  • SELECTIVE SERVICE: Males born after 12/31/1959 must be registered for the Selective Service.
  • MEDICAL EXAM: Applicants for this position must pass a pre-employment medical examination.
  • WORK SHIFTS: This position requires working on various shifts (day and night) including Saturdays, Sundays and Holidays as necessary.
  • PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be able to handle objects weighing 20 kilograms (45) pounds and occasionally carry objects weighing 223 kilograms (50) pounds or more over considerable distances.
  • DRIVER'S LICENSE: Must possess a current and valid state operator’s motor vehicle license and an acceptable driving record.
  • PROBATIONARY PERIOD: You must complete a one-year probationary period (unless already completed). 

Qualifications

Qualifications for the position are based on the training, experience, or other requirements that determine which applicants would be able to perform satisfactorily in the position to be filled.


For the Wage Grade 10, to qualify, your experience should include experience equal or equivalent to the Wage Grade 09, which includes the following:

  • Applicants must have journey level proficiency and the ability to maintain and repair Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems and components along with the journey level proficiency in at least one other trade such as: mechanical, electrical, carpentry, and plumbing trades.

  • Technical practices (theoretical, precise, artistic).
  • Ability to interpret instructions, specifications, etc.
  • Ability to use and maintain tools and equipment.
