Duties

Help

As a Statistician (Health) you will:

  • Serve as the senior science advisor to the Division Director and oversee the initiation, conduct, and monitoring of research projects in which the division is involved.
  • Guide and oversee the development and implementation of a program to improve the timeliness, accuracy, and usability of National Health Interview Survey data files and scientific reports to support national public health initiatives and to inform decision-makers on significant public health issues facing the American population.
  • Participate in division-level policy development and program planning to ensure that policies and programs reflect sound science and follow accepted research techniques.
  • Independently review reports, scientific papers, memoranda, and other similar material for accuracy, scientific merit, and adherence to agency policy, and provide recommendations concerning the scientific issues raised.
  • Represent the division and center at meetings with representatives of other Federal agencies and State and local agencies.
  • Collaborate with researchers in external organizations and in academia engaged in parallel research efforts, to compare findings, develop synergistic research relationships, and to maximize effective use of research resources.

Qualifications

BASIC QUALIFICATION:A. Applicants must have successfully completed a full four-year course of study at an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree that includes 15 semester hours in statistics (or in math and statistics, provided at least 6 semester hours were in statistics), and 9 additional semester hours in one or more of the following: physical/biological sciences, medicine, education, or engineering; or in the social sciences including demography, history, economics, social welfare, geography, international relations, social or cultural anthropology, health sociology, political science, public administration, psychology, etc.

B. Have a combination of education and experience -- courses as described in "A" above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. The experience should have included a full range of professional statistical work such as (a) sampling, (b) collecting, computing, and analyzing statistical data, and (c) applying statistical techniques such as measurement of central tendency, dispersion, skewness, sampling error, simple and multiple correlation, analysis of variance, and tests of significance. In addition to meeting the basic qualifications requirement, applicants must meet the specialized experience as stated below.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENT:Applicants must have at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-14 in the Federal service as defined in the next paragraph.
Specialized Experience: Specialized experience is experience which is directly related to the position which has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities (KSAs) to successfully perform the duties of the position which include planning, implementing and evaluating programs that produce and distribute survey-based health statistics data; and experience authoring, publishing, and reviewing scientific reports describing findings from studies based on health-related survey data.
