Duties

Help

The incumbent of this position will contribute computer and technology expertise to the Grazinglands Research Laboratory (GRL) by providing a broad range of support on traditional IT resources and non-traditional technology such as automated data systems, remote sensing instrumentation and database management to staff responsible for research and administrative functions.

Major Duties may include, but are not limited to:
  • Installing and maintaining local domain and stand-alone servers.
  • Participating in troubleshooting operational problems.
  • Maintaining the following network services: Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP); MAC hardware; File and Point; VMW ARS; and other network services
  • Identifying and correcting IT security weaknesses.
  • Providing information in research-grade unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) capable of deploying cm-scale resolution hyperspectral, Lidar, or other instruments.
  • Working with technicians on data collection and communication systems from remote, solar-powered research sites.

Qualifications

BASIC REQUIREMENT:

Applicants must have IT-related experience demonstrating each of the four competencies listed below:

  • Attention to Detail – Is thorough when performing work and conscientious about attending to detail.
  • Customer Service – Works with clients and customers (that is, any individuals who use or receive the services or products that your work unit produces, including the general public, individuals who work in the agency, other agencies, or organizations outside the Government) to assess their needs, provide information or assistance, resolve their problems, or satisfy their expectations; knows about available products and services; is committed to providing quality products and services.
  • Oral Communication – Expresses information (for example, ideas or facts) to individuals or groups effectively, taking into account the audience and nature of the information (for example, technical, sensitive, controversial); makes clear and convincing oral presentations; listens to others, attends to nonverbal cues, and responds appropriately.
  • Problem Solving – Identifies problems; determines accuracy and relevance of information; uses sound judgment to generate and evaluate alternatives, and make recommendations.

At the GS-11:

Qualifying experience for GS-11 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-09 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience providing IT support including desktop computer operations, administrative management software, and troubleshooting operational problems; identifying and correcting IT security weaknesses; providing technical training in the use of hardware and software; and assisting with developing and implementing technology solutions for data collection.

OR

Education: Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree or 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree or LL.M., if related.

At the GS-12:

Qualifying experience for GS-12 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-11 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience providing IT support including desktop computer operations, administrative management software, and troubleshooting operational problems; testing and evaluating new software or IT techniques; identifying and correcting IT security weaknesses; providing advice and training to users on technical aspects and problems related to PC hardware and peripheral equipment; and developing and implementing technology solutions for data collection.
