Summary

Duties

Help

Major Duties may include, but are not limited to:

  • Studies the acute effects of exercise and chronic effects of exercise training and diets on human physiological systems and outcomes including skeletal muscle, adipocytes, cardiovascular, metabolism and bioenergetics, energy expenditure, respiratory, and body composition.
  • Develops and implements methods to measure and quantify human physiological functions at the organism, system, and organ levels.
  • Independently performs recurring, well-precedence for human physiology projects using standard methods and techniques, identifies and resolves problems, prepares routine reports and makes presentations, and sets up and implements new procedures.

Qualifications

Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement including the following specialized experience and/or education, as identified below.

Basic Requirements:

Degree:
Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in one of the basic animal sciences or physiology; or a related discipline or field of science that included at least 24 semester hours in the basic animal sciences, of which 10 semester hours were in animal physiology.

Evaluation of Education: Courses such as anatomy; cytology; invertebrate and vertebrate zoology; embryology; entomology; animal, dairy, and poultry husbandry; nutrition; genetics; and physiology may be used to meet the 24-semester-hour requirement in the basic animal sciences.

Courses in physiology, animal or human physiology, cellular physiology, or courses that were well oriented toward animal or human physiology, e.g., some advanced courses in biochemistry, are qualifying as animal physiology courses. Courses in related fields such as cytology and microbiology (including microbial physiology) may also be qualifying, provided the course work dealt directly with the application of scientific principles underlying animal physiology, or with the methodology and techniques applied in animal physiology work.

Specialized Experience: Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. Specialized experience must be described for each grade level advertised. The specialized experience requirements for this position are:

At the GS-09 level

Qualifying experience for GS-09 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-07 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the competencies to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience participating in developing human exercise regimens using human exercise physiology techniques; performing human scientific research studies; and analyzing and interpreting data using computer software.

OR

Education: Master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's degree or master's or equivalent graduate degree in a field directly related to the duties of the position. Related degrees may include: Kinesiology, Exercise Physiology, Exercise Science, or Human Bioenergetics.

OR

A combination of graduate level education and experience as described above.

Education

An unofficial copy is sufficient with the application; however, if you are selected, you will be required to submit official transcripts prior to entering on duty. Education must have been successfully obtained from an accredited school, college or university. If any education was completed at a foreign institute, you must submit with your application evidence that the institute was appropriately accredited by an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education as equivalent to U.S. education standards. This is a bargaining unit designated position.

Applicants who meet basic minimum qualifications will be placed in one of two or three categories: Best Qualified, Well Qualified, or Qualified.
