Duties

Help

 Major Duties may include, but are not limited to:

  • Installing and maintaining wind erosion monitoring instrumentation.
  • Managing and utilizing soil characterization data to assist in developing wind erosion estimates.
  • Managing a modern soil characterization laboratory and collaborating with related large-scale research projects.
  • Using research related analytical instruments and data collection systems (i.e. automated size particle analyzers, wind erosion instruments, automated data collection instruments, automated data collection software, etc.)
  • Physically and chemically analyzing soil and sediment samples for bulk density, texture, pH, particle size analysis, electrical conductivity, etc.
  • Supervising the selection and quality control of contract services and equipment
  • Training and supervising technical staff in analytical procedures used in a soil and sediment analysis laboratory.

The incumbent must possess hand-to-eye dexterity and be able to accurately conduct tedious measurement procedures. Long periods of standing are involved for some work. Field work requires hauling heavy equipment over moderate distances in often hot conditions.

Qualifications

Time-in-grade restrictions apply for all candidates considered under merit promotion procedures and must be met by 11:59 pm Eastern Time on the closing date of this vacancy announcement.

Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement including the following specialized experience and/or education, as identified below.


Basic Requirements:

To qualify at the 0470 series:

Degree : Soil science or a closely related discipline that included 30 semester hours or equivalent in biological, physical, or earth science, with a minimum of 15 semester hours in such subjects as soil genesis, pedology, soil chemistry, soil physics, and soil fertility.

OR

Combination of education and experience : courses equivalent to a major in soil science or a related discipline that included at least 30 semester hours in the biological, physical, or earth sciences. At least 15 of these semester hours must have been in the areas specified above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

In addition to the basic requirement above, all applicants must meet the following minimum qualifications:

Specialized Experience :   Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled.  Specialized experience must be described for each grade level advertised.  The specialized experience requirements for this position are:

At the GS-11:

Qualifying experience for GS-11 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-9 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience supporting research projects focused on wind erosion, soil characterization, or rangeland monitoring; installing and maintaining wind erosion monitoring instrumentation; using analytical instruments and data collection systems to analyze soil or sediment samples; and managing a research laboratory.

OR

Education Substitution: 3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree, if related.

OR

A combination of education and experience as described above.
