Duties

Help

The incumbent is responsible for providing professional expertise in the management of Dale Bumper's Small Farms Research Center at Booneville, AR. The position supports a team of 5 federal scientists.

Major Duties may include, but are not limited to:

  • Participating in the research program by planning, initiating and executing a sound (organic/conventional) herd, flock, feeding and forage/cop management program that is specific to the needs of the scientists.
  • Assisting with the effective execution of the operating budget and suggesting methods and procedures that will more effectively utilize existing funding.
  • Maintaining records of herbicide, pesticide, feed, and seed acquisition, storage and usage.
  • Coordinating the use of tractors, equipment and machinery and ensuring that machinery and equipment are properly maintained, inspected and serviced at all times.

Subject to successful completion of a one year supervisory/managerial period.

Most work will be conducted outside during frequent visits to the research site, laboratories, animal facilities, pastures, and other related sites. Some work will be conducted inside. Must exercise reasonable care around animals, quarantine areas, and equipment operations.

Time in grade:
Applicants must meet one year at the next lower grade to be considered for the next higher grade  

Basic Requirements:

Degree:
biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position.

OR

Combination of education and experience:
Courses equivalent to a major, as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

AND

In addition to the basic requirement above, all applicants must meet the following minimum qualifications:

At the GS-11:


Specialized Experience: Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. Specialized experience must be described for each grade level advertised. The specialized experience requirements for this position are:

Qualifying experience for GS-11 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-09 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is planning and executing an animal or farm management research program using Agricultural Business/Management education knowledge; providing care and management to animals and forage systems; developing inventories for livestock and feed; and providing maintenance to facilities and farm equipment.

OR

EDUCATION SUBSTITUTION:

3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree

OR


COMBINATION OF EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: A qualifying combination of education and experience. Note: only graduate-level education in excess of two full years is qualifying for combining education and experience.

Qualifying experience for GS-12 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-11 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is planning and executing an animal or farm management research program using Agricultural Business/Management education knowledge; is planning and executing an animal or farm management research program; providing care and management to animals and forage systems; developing inventories for livestock and feed; providing maintenance to facilities and farm equipment; and assisting with providing technical direction for staff and service personnel.
