Summary

The position is located in The Agricultural Research Service (ARS), Southeast Area, Location Support Staff in Raleigh, North Carolina.  

The incumbent of this position will assist the Maintenance Mechanic by performing the simple and routine duties of the trades In support efforts to maintain buildings, grounds and equipment; operate a motor vehicle to transport supplies, equipment and materials; and move heavy freight, furniture and machinery.

Duties

Help

Major Duties may include, but are not limited to:

  • Operating motor vehicles over public roads to transport supplies and materials.
  • Loading and unloading vehicles by hand.
  • Moving heavy freight, furniture, machinery, and other items weighing over 50 pounds.
  • Aiding with remodeling efforts of labs and offices.
  • Maintaining tool and equipment including.
  • Performing other duties as assigned.

Successful completion of one year probationary period.

Must possess or be able to obtain a valid state driver’s license.

PHYSICAL EFFORT

Moderately heavy physical effort is required when using ladders and scaffolds; operating powered equipment; and carrying materials. Work requires continual standing, bending, stooping, reaching, and occasionally lifting and carrying Items weighing up to 50 pounds. Using normal safety practices, only minor risk of Injury is expected.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Work is performed not only inside but also in all kinds of weather. The Inside work may occur in areas that are dusty, drafty, and noisy. The equipment, tools, and tasks Involved frequently require extreme care and use of safety gloves, ear plugs, safety glasses, or respirators to avoid serious Injuries.

In order to qualify for this position you must meet the following by the closing date of the vacancy announcement.

Qualifications will be determined under the Job Element Rating System X-118C, Qualifications Standard Handbook. While a specific length of time and experience is not required for most Wage Grade positions, you must show through experience and training that you possess the best qualified level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of this position. Qualification requirements emphasize the quality of experience, not necessarily the length. The responses to the questionnaire and your resume should be in significant detail to provide the person rating your application with a good understanding of your ability to do the job, technical knowledge, work, and training experience, etc. You must have the ability to perform the duties of a Maintenance Helper, WG-4749-05, without more than normal supervision (Screen Out). Applicants who do not meet the SCREEN OUT ELEMENT will not be given further consideration.

You will be evaluated for this job based on how well you meet the qualifications above.

Applications will be evaluated in accordance with Office of Personnel Managements (OPM) Delegated Examining Procedures using category rating. Applicants who meet basic minimum qualifications will be placed in one of two or three categories: Best Qualified, Well Qualified, or Qualified. Within these categories, applicants eligible for veteran's preference will receive selection priority over non-veterans. Category placement will be determined based on applicants quality of experience and the extent they possess the following knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA) or competencies:

  • Ability To Do The Work Of The Position Without More Than Normal Supervision(Screen-out Element)
  • Knowledge of Equipment Assembly, Installation, Repair, etc.
  • Technical Practices (theoretical, precise, artistic)
  • Ability to Use and Maintain Tools and Equipment
