The Senior Scientist for Cognitive Neuroscience supports the Director and the Chief Scientist in technical reviews and assessment of programs and new study areas, and interacts with other Air Force and government agencies in matters relating to cognitive science, including: artificial intelligence, cognitive psychology, cognitive neuroscience, computational modeling and simulation, constructive agents, decision science, education and training, human performance and learning, intelligent tutoring systems, linguistics, mathematical modeling, and robust human-machine teaming. The primary objective is to advance the knowledge of cognitive science technologies to meet the needs of the Air Force.
For 0800, General Engineering Series:
a. A professional engineering degree from an accredited institution is required. To be acceptable, the curriculum must: (1) be in a school of engineering with at least one curriculum accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) as a professional engineering curriculum; or (2) include differential and integral calculus and courses (more advanced than first-year physics and chemistry) in five of the following seven areas of engineering science or physics: (a) statics, dynamics; (b) strength of materials (stress-strain relationships); (c) fluid mechanics, hydraulics; (d) thermodynamics; (e) electrical fields and circuits; (f) nature and properties of materials (relating particle and aggregate structure to properties); and (g) any other comparable area of fundamental engineering science or physics, such as optics, heat transfer, soil mechanics, or electronics.

b. A combination of education and experience as required by the U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM). Tax Law Impact for PCS: On 22-Dec-2017, Public Law 115-97 - the "Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017 suspended qualified moving expense deductions along with the exclusion for employer reimbursements and payments of moving expenses effective 01-Jan-2018 for tax years 2018 through 2025. APPOINTMENT TYPES:
A. EXTERNAL to federal government: Candidate selected from outside of the government will be appointed to a flexible term appointment. The flexible term appointment can be utilized for up to a five (5) year period and may be extended in up to five (5) year increments. Candidates may be eligible for conversion to a career appointment if services are deemed permanent, served a minimum of one year of continuous service on the term appointment and have at least a fully successful performance rating.
B. INTERNAL Air Force employees: Candidate selected who is a current AFRL employee will be placed on a flexible temporary promotion. The flexible temporary promotion can be utilized for up to a five (5) year period and extended in up to five (5) year increments. Candidates may be permanently promoted if services are deemed permanent, served a minimum of one (1) year of continuous service on the temporary promotion
and have a least a fully successful performance rating.
C. Current federal employees external to air force: Candidate selected who is a current non-AFRL government employee will be placed on a flexible temporary promotion. Candidate selected who is a current non-AFRL permanent government employee will be reassigned to an AFRL DR-IV (GS-15 equivalent) position then placed on a flexible temporary promotion. The flexible temporary promotion can be utilized for up to a five (5) year period and extended in up to five (5) year increments. Candidates may be converted to a career appointment if services are deemed permanent, served a minimum of one (1) year of continuous service on the temporary promotion and have a least a fully successful performance rating.

A screening panel will evaluate the candidates for this position composed of a diverse mix of senior executives selected for organizational and/or functional backgrounds relevant to this position. The qualifications stated are the minimum requirements of the position to be Qualified, a rating schedule will be applied by a screening panel to determine which candidates are considered to be Best Qualified.
