Duties

Help

The incumbent will perform a full range of Boiler Plant Operating duties such as the following:

  • The incumbent is responsible for the operation and general maintenance of the boiler plant facilities.
  • The incumbent diagnoses, understands and calibrates automatic, semiautomatic, and flame failure controls as necessity requires. Repairs and replaces mechanical and electrical controls.
  • The incumbent shall monitor air conditioning equipment adjacent to the boiler plant, determining any malfunctions which should be corrected. The incumbent constantly observes all pressure reducing stations and makes any necessary adjustments to maintain pre-determined pressure.
  • The Incumbent must be able to run tests of samples of boiler water to determine such things as acidity, causticity, and alkalinity by using prescribed chemical reagents, color slides, and other standards.
  • The operator constantly monitors, through instrumentation, the entire function of the plant to determine proper pressures, combustion, and auxiliary equipment performing at maximum efficiency.
  • The incumbent works from standard operating procedures and/or supervisory instructions having full responsibilities to make decisions in the proper operation of equipment.

PHYSICAL EFFORT
Incumbent is not subject to sustained physical effort. Occasionally, work is performed in awkward and cramped positions when making repairs. Frequent standing, walking and climbing is required while checking equipment.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Incumbent is subject to high noise levels, heat, dust and many other hazardous conditions which normally prevail in a high pressure boiler plant and air conditioner plant. The incumbent is required to work from ladders and scaffolds when repairing and replacing equipment.

In order to qualify for this position you must meet the following by the closing date of the vacancy announcement:

Qualifications will be determined under the Job Element Rating System X-118C, Qualifications Standard Handbook. While a specific length of time and experience is not required for most Wage Grade positions, you must show through experience and training that you possess the best qualified level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of this position. Qualification requirements emphasize the quality of experience, not necessarily the length. The responses to the questionnaire and your resume should be in significant detail to provide the person rating your application with a good understanding of your ability to do the job, technical knowledge, work, and training experience, etc. You must have the ability to perform the duties of a Boiler Plant Operator GS-5402-10, without more than normal supervision (Screen Out). Applicants who do not meet the SCREEN OUT ELEMENT will not be given further consideration.

You will be evaluated for this job based on how well you meet the qualifications above.

Applications will be evaluated in accordance with Office of Personnel Managements (OPM) Delegated Examining Procedures using category rating. Applicants who meet basic minimum qualifications will be placed in one of two or three categories: Best Qualified, Well Qualified, or Qualified. Within these categories, applicants eligible for veteran's preference will receive selection priority over non-veterans. Category placement will be determined based on applicants quality of experience and the extent they possess the following knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA) or competencies:

    • Ability to do work of a Boiler Plant Operator without more than normal supervision (SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT)
    • Knowledge of equipment assembly, installation, repair etc.
    • Operation of boiler plant equipment
    • Technical Practices (theoretical, precise, artistic)
    • Use of measuring instruments
    • Ability to interpret instructions, specifications, etc. (other than blueprint reading)
