Duties

Help

Interns will work on various assignments within one of GAO's Administrative Professional & Support Staff (APSS) offices:

Applied Research and Methods (ARM) Library Services: Assist with basic duties for library services that include conducting reference and research, acquiring information resources for GAO, organizing and making information resources accessible, creating subject guides on topics such as accounting and finance, economics, education, healthcare, national defense, natural resources, public policy, transportation, telecommunications.

Chief Administrative Office (CAO): Work with internal stakeholders to collect and analyze data to spot trends and improve the efficiency and effectiveness of internal GAO operations for CAO administrative functions, including information technology, human capital, infrastructure operations, field operations, internal communications, budget and financial operations.

Congressional Relations (CR): Identify and monitor the status of legislation; prepare records of reports required by statute or requested by Members of Congress for review by GAO’s Executive Committee; conduct research regarding GAO’s impact on legislation and Congressional oversight.

Continuous Process Improvement (CPI): Support a variety of process improvement and change management activities including gathering and analyzing data, documenting work processes, documenting business needs for mission systems, helping to facilitate and document results of focus groups, and creating written communications.

Human Capital Office (HCO): Perform a full-range of analytical and technical work assignments to support GAO’s human resources functions such as researching human capital trends and leading practices, processing personnel and payroll actions, developing recruitment strategies and communications materials, and enhancing organizational diversity and inclusion program.

Infrastructure Operations (IO): Perform analytical studies focused on evaluating the effectiveness of various business operations, processes, and programs in the subject areas of facility management, security and emergency management, and records management.

Financial Management and Business Operations (FMBO): Responsible for maintaining, organizing, interpreting, and reviewing accounting documents and data for record management purposes; analyzing and reviewing data to ensure consistency; conducting analysis of GAO/FMBO’s best practices.

Learning Center (LC): Provide assistance to the agency’s Learning & Talent Development Unit in the field of instructional systems design (ISD). This includes the analysis, development and implementation of classroom, webinar, and eLearning courseware. The Learning Center intern shall work across all curriculum areas and subject matter experts to identify appropriate ISD strategies to be implemented by our Adjunct Faculty Program and Learning Management System.

Public Affairs (PA): Assist with the product line steering committee and working groups; reaching new communications platforms and new features of existing communications platforms.

Strategic Planning and External Liaison (SPEL): Support SPEL's Strategic Planning and Foresight office by advancing the use of foresight tools in support of GAO’s strategic planning process. This includes using foresight tools and techniques such as environmental scanning, scenarios building, projections and backcasting to identify and analyze long-term trends impacting the whole of government. Interns will support capacity building of various foresight related programs to include identifying foresight leaders and efforts to advance GAO’s overall mission

Office of the General Counsel (OGC) Legal Support Services Branch (LSSB): Assist management with a variety of administrative support functions including; covering front office and answering phones when needed, filing, copying, arranges meetings, securing space or arranging for audio and video conferencing; assist manager with updating attorney recruiting materials; utilizing automated systems, such as; the Law Schools recruiting system to enter and update recruiting profiles. Assist Paralegals with maintaining CRA data system, supporting attorneys on projects, researching and retrieving GAO and the OGC records and historical documents as requested.

Office of the General Counsel (OGC) Procurement Law Control Group (PLCG): Provide overall administrative support to the paralegals and attorneys, including opening and closing bid protest cases, processing correspondence, bid protest hearings, and assist the PLCG manager with various projects.

Information Systems and Technology Services (ISTS), Budget, Acquisition, and Contracts Group (BACG): Assist in performing budget formulation and administration duties using Financial and MS office systems.

Information Systems and Technology Services (ISTS), Customer Relations Group (CRG): Assist with writing step-by-step training materials and conduct training when needed.

Qualifications

All qualification requirements must be met by the start of the internship.


To qualify for the GS-7 level, you must be enrolled in a graduate or equivalent degree seeking program, and meet one of the following criteria:

1. You must have completed between 18 to 35 semester hours or 27 to 53 quarter hours of graduate level education; or

2. You must possess a Bachelor's degree with Superior Academic Achievement (defined below).

Superior Academic Achievement: Superior academic achievement (SAA) recognizes individuals who have achieved superior academic standing. S.A.A. is based on (1) class standing, (2) grade-point average, or (3) honor society membership. Class standing -- Applicants must be in the upper third of the graduating class in the college, university, or major subdivision, such as the College of Liberal Arts or the School of Business Administration, based on completed courses. Grade-point average (G.P.A.)-- Applicants must have a grade-point average of: a.3.0 or higher out of a possible 4.0 ("B" or better) as recorded on their official transcript, or as computed based on 4 years of education, or as computed based on courses completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum; or .3.5 or higher out of a possible 4.0 ("B+" or better) based on the average of the required courses completed in the major field or the required courses in the major field completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum.

To qualify for the GS-9 level, you must be enrolled in a graduate or equivalent degree seeking program, and meet one of the following criteria:

1.  You must have completed 36 or more semester hours or 54 or more quarter hours of graduate level education; or

2.  You must possess a Master's Degree or Equivalent Graduate degree.


All education must be gained from an accredited academic institution.

Additional information

This position does not have promotion potential.

Interns must work a minimum of 400 hours, not to exceed a total of 640 hours.

The anticipated start date is May/June 2019. Student interns may have an opportunity for a permanent or term position based on a successful intern experience (completion of a minimum of 400 hours of work) and successful completion of degree requirements. In addition, the conversion could be team specific. The ability to convert to a permanent or term appointment with 400 hours of work experience is contingent upon budgetary conditions and staffing needs at the time of eligibility.
