WHO MAY APPLY: Students who are currently enrolled or accepted for enrollment on at least a half-time basis at a qualifying educational institution in a certificate, degree, or diploma program with a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher on a 4.0 scale.
The incumbent of this position receives varied assignments designed to provide on-the-job training and experience in activities related to veterinary services.
Assignments will vary by Agency, Office, and setting, including headquarters-type setting, veterinary field environment, and veterinary laboratory.
The major duties for each setting include, but are not limited to, the following:
Headquarters-type Setting:
Supports program management and animal health information systems.
Gathers, verifies, and enters information and data.
Conducts document reviews and literature searches.
Conducts statistical, quantitative or qualitative analysis and produces analytical reports.
Translates veterinary medical, scientific, and regulatory information into language easily understood by a variety of contacts.
Veterinary Field Environment:
Supports Veterinary Medical Officers in the application of standard veterinary medical practices.
Contacts livestock and poultry owners to schedule testing.
Identifies, tags, and records animals to be tested.
Draws blood samples for laboratory testing.
Performs testing of various livestock, poultry, and animal body tissues to detect and diagnose disease and other conditions.
Veterinary Laboratory Setting:
Supports work of program management and/or animal health information systems.
Collects, verifies, and tracks data to produce reports.
Performs veterinary testing and identification activities to assist in animal disease control and eradication.
Required to pass a background investigation and fingerprint check.
DIRECT DEPOSIT: All Federal employees are required to have Federal salary payments made by direct deposit to a financial institution of their choosing.

Qualifications
Pathways Intern Program Eligibility Requirements:
Applicants must meet Pathways Intern Program Eligibility Requirements as shown below by the closing date of the announcement.
Applicants must be currently enrolled or accepted for enrollment from a qualifying educational institution on a full or half-time basis.
Applicants must be seeking a degree (diploma, certificate, etc.) and be in good academic standing (GPA of 2.5 or equivalent) to qualify for the intern program and to stay throughout the duration of their intern program.
The duties of the position must be related to the student's academic field of study or career interests.
Position Qualifications:
Applicants must meet position qualifications requirements as shown below at the time of appointment. Entrance on duty dates for appointment are scheduled for May 26, 2019; June 09, 2019; June 23, 2019; or July 07, 2019. The agency must be able to verify that the education was completed successfully before the applicant can be appointed.
GS-07: Completion of 1 full academic year of graduate level education in Veterinary Medicine or equivalent field of study obtained at a school or college of veterinary medicine accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association Council on Education (AVMA) OR have met superior academic achievement (SAA) requirements in addition to completing a bachelor's degree. (SAA may be met by one of the following three methods: (1) class standing - be in the upper third of the graduating class based on completed courses in the college, university or major subdivision; (2) grade point average - 3.0 or higher out of a possible 4.0 ("B" or better) as recorded on your official transcript, or as computed based on 4 years of education, or as computed based on courses completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum; OR 3.5 or higher out of a possible 4.0 ("B " or better) based on the average of the required courses completed in the major field or the required courses in the major field completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum; OR (3) election to membership in a national scholastic honor society (note: membership in a freshman honor society cannot be used to meet the requirements of this provision)).
GS-09: Completion of 2 academic years of graduate level education, or a master's degree or equivalent graduate degree in Veterinary Medicine or equivalent field of study obtained at a school or college of veterinary medicine accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association Council on Education (AVMA).

NOTE: Grades recruited for are the GS-07 and GS-09, however, not every USDA agency and location will select for all or any grades. Selections will be made according to agency needs.

Additional information
This is an Excepted Service appointment. This announcement will be used to fill full-time or part-time temporary summer student internship positions and may not exceed 6 months. However, an extension of the appointment may be possible without further competition when the student intern remains eligible for the program. The appointment may also end early due to lack of work or funds.

Student Interns must continue to meet the Pathways Program requirements throughout the duration of the appointment. Incumbents will be required to provide proof of continued enrollment and good standing (cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher on a 4.0 scale) each semester or grading period throughout the internship program. Pathways Interns may be converted to a term, career-conditional or career appointment before expiration of the original NTE appointment if that date is within 120 days of the completion of degree requirements provided all other requirements for conversion have been met; however, conversion is not guaranteed. To be eligible for conversion, Interns must:
Be a U.S. citizen;
Have completed at least 640 hours of work experience acquired through the Internship Program;
Have completed educational requirements from a qualifying institution;
Meet the qualification requirements for the position to which the Intern will be converted;
Meet agency-specific requirements as specified in the Participant's Agreement and;
Have received a favorable recommendation by an official of the agency.
These internship positions are designed to prepare a student trainee for employment after graduation in the Veterinary Medical Science field. The occupational series to which interns may be converted may have specific educational requirements for entry and applicants must show evidence that their planned academic program will meet those requirements (i.e. transcript reflecting enrollment in applicable programs). Students who graduate without meeting those requirements may not be converted to the target position and could be separated from federal service.
