Duties

Help

Major duties may include, but are not limited to:

  • Providing technical support in maintaining the aquatic life support system (ALSS) and the aquatic animals
  • Administering prescribed treatments by various routes such as intravenous (IV), intramuscular (IM), bath treatment or orally
  • Recognizing potential problems and making recommendations for preventive actions in an aquaculture environment
  • Performing water quality tests and maintaining breeding program
  • Installing life support systems including temporary tanks, for aquatic animals
  • Maintaining the stock of required spare parts, tools, and test instruments

This position requires the selectee to undergo a Special Agreement Check (SAC), Security Risk Assessment (SRA), and a full background investigation (Moderate Risk/Public Trust – Minimum Background Investigation (MBI)).  Any offer made is considered a tentative job offer pending the outcome of the SAC.  Retention in the position is contingent on a favorable full background investigation (MBI).  The incumbent will be subject to periodic reinvestigations.

Physical Demands
Work requires some physical exertion such as regular and recurring stooping, walking, climbing, working above shoulder height, or bending. Moderate to heavy physical exertion maintaining large tanks and the aquatic animals is required daily. Occasional lifting of up to 50 pounds is required. In many situations the duration of the activity (such as most of a work day) contributes to the arduous nature of the job. In other situations, such as the laboratory, there may be special requirements for agility or dexterity such as hand/eye coordination.

Work Environment
Work is performed in a laboratory environment in a ABSL3 biocontainment facility which involves regular and recurring moderate risks or discomforts requiring special safety precautions, e.g., working with electronic equipment, warmer/colder environments, or working with plumbing. Work requires wearing personal protective equipment such as protective clothing, boots, gloves, respirators, and safety goggles. Incumbent may be required to be fitted and wear a full face respirator when working in biological control areas; facial hair restrictions will be required to comply with proper operation of personal protective equipment. Incumbent will respond to emergency situations that occur after working hours and on weekends that involve malfunctions of the ALSS.

Other Considerations
For the health and safety of the incumbent and to prevent the spread of disease, immunization against diseases being studied at NCAH which are transmissible to humans may be required where the vaccine has been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for safety and effectiveness under the provisions of the Federal, Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act, as amended 2 1 USC 32 1-393. Where the FDA for investigation purposes has approved the vaccine, the incumbent will be advised that such immunization is voluntary.

Qualifications

Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement including the following specialized experience and/or education, as identified below.

Qualification Requirements at the GS-07:

Qualifying experience for GS-7 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-6 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience providing technical support in the maintenance and care of aquatic animals or fish; operating and maintaining aquatic equipment including an aquatic life support systems; and researching information and literature pertaining to aquaculture.

OR

Education: One full year of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's or equivalent graduate degree, if directly related. Related degrees include Biology and Marine Biology. 

OR

An appropriate combination of specialized experience and graduate level education directly related to the work of the position as stated above.
