Duties

Help

Major Duties may include, but are not limited to:

  • Performs scientific duties to support soil, water and air quality research studies.
  • Collects, processes and analyzes soil, water or plant samples for agricultural research studies.
  • Uses sensors to measure soil water content.
  • Ensures data quality by reviewing field measurements and laboratory analytical results.
  • Calibrates and validates compute simulation models for predicting soil, water or air quality.
  • Uses computer simulation models to calculate air emissions from dairy farms and manure application sites.
  • Selects appropriate statistical models and performs valid statistical analysis.
  • Programs data loggers and data acquisition systems.
  • Summarizes experimental results in the form suitable for manuscripts, presentations or posters.

Qualifications

Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement including the following specialized experience and/or education, as identified below.

Basic Requirements

To qualify at the 0470 series:

Degree: soil science or a closely related discipline that included 30 semester hours or equivalent in biological, physical, or earth science, with a minimum of 15 semester hours in such subjects as soil genesis, pedology, soil chemistry, soil physics, and soil fertility.

OR

Combination of education and experience: courses equivalent to a major in soil science or a related discipline that included at least 30 semester hours in the biological, physical, or earth sciences. At least 15 of these semester hours must have been in the areas specified in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

In addition to the basic requirement above, all applicants must meet the following minimum qualifications:

Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. Specialized experience must be described for each grade level advertised. The specialized experience requirements for this position are:

At the GS-11:

Qualifying experience for GS-11 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-9 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience researching production and environmental solutions in irrigated crop or animal production systems; collecting and processing data for soil, water or air quality research projects and experiments; selecting appropriate statistical models and performing valid statistical analysis; and summarizing experimental results for written and oral presentations or scientific reports. 

OR

Education Substitution: 3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree; if directly related to the work of the position.

OR

A combination of education and experience as described above.
