Summary

This position is located in the Range and Meadow Forage Management Research Unit, with one vacancy located in Burns, Oregon. The incumbent will support a Range Scientist conducting research on livestock grazing impacts, woody plant control with fire and mechanical treatments, and applied ecology in the sagebrush steppe and other Northern Great Basin ecosystems.

This position is in a GS-5/6/7/8/9 career ladder but is only being advertised at the GS-5 and GS-7 levels.

Duties

Help

Major duties may include, but are not limited to:
  • Assisting in one or more phases of the research process by performing a variety of technical duties, in a laboratory, meadow, or rangeland environment, common to the assigned area of work.
  • Keeping detailed records of experimental data.
  • Performing plant taxonomic identification.
  • Collecting, preparing, evaluating, and verifying samples and supporting records.
  • Performing field measurements to quantify plant communities, plant species identification and community response to rangeland treatments.
  • Performing or managing vegetation treatments including prescribed fire and mechanical control of woody plants for experimental studies.
  • Performing routine and recurring techniques and studies using a variety of common and specialized equipment appropriate for rangeland research
  • Tabulating, statistically analyzes and summarizes data using personal computers and software packages

At the GS-05:

Qualifying experience for GS-5 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-4 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience assisting in conducting rangeland or meadow research studies by collecting and preparing forage samples and data; compiling and maintaining research results and data using automated systems; and operating scientific equipment and instruments.

OR

Education: Completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelors degree (a) with major study in forestry, range management, agriculture, or a subject-matter field directly related to the position, or (b) that included at least 24 semester hours in any combination of courses such as forestry, agriculture, crop or plant science, range management or conservation, wildlife management, watershed management, soil science, natural resources (except marine fisheries and oceanography), outdoor recreation management, civil or forest engineering, or wildland fire science. No more than 6 semester hours in mathematics is creditable.

At the GS-07:

Qualifying experience for GS-7 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-6 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience conducting rangeland and meadow research studies by collecting and preparing forage samples and data; compiling and maintaining research results and data using automated systems; operating scientific equipment and instruments; and assisting in the development and improvement of techniques and procedures within the experiment process.

OR

Education: One full year of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a masters or equivalent graduate degree, if directly related. Related degrees include forestry, range management, agriculture, or a subject-matter field directly related to the position.
