Duties

Help

The mission of the Unit is to anticipate research needs, develop knowledge, and provide technological solutions to optimize agricultural production systems, at the sub-field to watershed scale, for both economic and environmental sustainability. This position supports research directed towards the development of best management practices for protecting water quality.

Major Duties may include, but are not limited to:

  • Applying a wide range of scientific theories and principles of soil science, including microbiology, chemistry, biochemistry, and physics to work within a variety of agroecosystems to conduct complex experiments, recognize soil science problems, and scientific implications.
  • Being responsible for a wide variety of data management duties, including timely transfer of laboratory data, assessment of quality assurance data, and summarizing and statistically analyzing air and water quality data.
  • Maintaining official laboratory notebooks, recording methods and procedures used, any procedural modifications, observations, and results obtained.
  • Contributing to the evaluation of employee performance, insuring adequate materials and supplies for lab operations, coordinating of field activities, and evaluating laboratory operations to optimize resource utilization.
  • Searching scientific literature for principles, methods, and procedures and selecting the most appropriate for the research goals and fiscal resources to conduct complex soil experiments.

•  Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license for the type of vehicle operated to perform the duties of this position. This will require the operation of a motor vehicle on both public and private roads during daylight hours and occasionally after dark.

Qualifications

Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by 11:59 pm Eastern Time on the closing date of the announcement including the following specialized experience and/or education, as identified by grade level.

Basic Requirements:

To qualify at the 0470 series:

Degree: Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in soil science or a closely related discipline that included 30 semester hours or equivalent in biological, physical, or earth science, with a minimum of 15 semester hours in such subjects as soil genesis, pedology, soil chemistry, soil physics, and soil fertility.

OR

Combination of education and experience: courses equivalent to a major in soil science or a related discipline that included at least 30 semester hours in the biological, physical, or earth sciences. At least 15 of these semester hours must have been in the areas specified above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

AND

In addition to the basic requirement above, all applicants must meet the following minimum qualifications:

At the GS-09:

Qualifying experience for GS-9 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-7 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is providing research support that includes conducting and supporting experiments to determine the impact of agricultural contaminants; summarizing and statistically analyze soil science data; maintaining and calibrating laboratory instruments and equipment; and writing laboratory reports.

 OR

Education: 2 years of directly related progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master’s degree or master’s or equivalent graduate degree. Related degrees may include Soil Science or other science degree with an emphasis on soil.

OR

A combination of education and experience

At the GS-11:

Qualifying experience for GS-11 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-9 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized providing research support that includes conducting and supporting experiments to determine the impact of agricultural contaminants; summarizing and statistically analyze soil science data; maintaining and calibrating laboratory instruments and equipment; writing laboratory reports; and determining the proper experimental approach and methods to conduct measurements and analyses .

OR

Education: 3 years of directly related progressively higher graduate education leading to a Ph.D degree or Ph.D or equivalent doctoral degree. Related degrees may include Soil Science or other science degree with an emphasis on soil.

OR

A combination of education and experience.
