Duties

Help

This position will support the activities of a Research Entomologist who is conducting research on the biology and control of mosquitoes and other biting flies, and oversees the mass rearing of 8 species of mosquitoes, which are used to support the research activities of all research scientists in the Mosquito and Fly Research Unit.

Major Duties may include, but are not limited to:

  • Maintaining colonies of the following genera of mosquitos: Aedes; Anopheles; and Culex.
  • Rearing multiple species of mosquitos.
  • Keeping exact and detailed records of mosquito production data.
  • Maintaining, calibrating and modifying environmental chambers used for test and evaluation procedures.
  • Using the following instruments or techniques to obtain, analyze and summarize data/samples: utilization of specialized diets for target mosquito species; use of environmental chambers or walk-in rooms; use of microscopes to identify mosquito life stages; use of various techniques/equipment for separating various life stages; and use of various techniques to feed adult mosquitoes (sugar and blood feeding).

Qualifications

Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by 11:59 pm Eastern Time on the closing date of the announcement including the following specialized experience and/or education, as identified by grade level.

Specialized Experience: Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. Specialized experience must be described for each grade level advertised. The specialized experience requirements for this position are:

At the GS-05:

Qualifying experience for the GS-05 level includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-04 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience participating in a research project related to mosquitos; assisting with rearing multiple species of mosquitos; and keeping records of experimental data.

OR

Education: Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study above the high school level leading to a bachelors degree with major study or at least 24 semester hours in any combination of courses such as biology, chemistry, statistics, entomology, animal husbandry, botany, physics, agriculture, or mathematics. At least 6 semester hours of courses must have been directly related. Related courses include Biology, Entomology, and Chemistry.

OR

A combination of education and experience as described above.

At the GS-06:

Qualifying experience for the GS-06 level includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-05 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience with collecting and evaluating samples from mosquitos; rearing multiple species of mosquitos; keeping records of experimental data; and assisting with performing and improving techniques for separating and feeding mosquitos.

OR

Education: One full year of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a masters or equivalent graduate degree, if directly related. Related degrees include Biology, Entomology, and Chemistry.

OR

A combination of education and experience as described above.
