Duties

Help

 Major Duties may include, but are not limited to:

  • Performing a wide range of duties designed to solve complex research problems in the area of fish health, utilizing methods in the disciplines of microbiology and molecular biology.
  • Independently selecting and carrying out measurements and analyses by applying established or modified methods by performing difficult nonstandard tests and assays.
  • Calibrating, maintaining, operating, and modifying complex microbiological instruments to independently perform measures, analyses, and interpretations.
  • Organizing experimental progress in a form suitable for oral presentation or posters for scientific meetings.
  • Maintaining official laboratory notebooks, recording methods and procedures used, any procedural modifications, observations, and results obtained.
  • Translating scientific documents, patent information and material transfer agreements from English to Spanish and Spanish to English.

  • Reviewing chemical hygiene plans. Developing a rapid response plan for chemical spills and safety related emergencies for the location. Managing and insuring that unit chemical inventories are accurately maintained by each user. Overseeing location master chemical inventory.

  • Serving as a member of the location safety, security and environmental management system committees (EMS).

Qualifications

Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement including the following specialized experience and/or education, as identified below.

Time in grade: Applicants must meet one year at the next lower grade to be considered for the next higher grade  

Basic Requirements:

Degree:
microbiology; or biology, chemistry, or basic medical science that included at least 20 semester hours in microbiology and other subjects related to the study of microorganisms, and 20 semester hours in the physical and mathematical sciences combining course work in organic chemistry or biochemistry, physics, and college algebra, or their equivalent.

OR

Combination of education and experience: courses equivalent to a major in microbiology, biology, chemistry, or basic medical science that included courses as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

AND

In addition to the basic requirement above, all applicants must meet the following minimum qualifications:

Specialized Experience:  Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled.  Specialized experience must be described for each grade level advertised.  The specialized experience requirements for this position are:

Qualifying experience for GS-12 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-11 grade level in the Federal service which has equipped the candidate with the competencies to perform the duties of the position. Specialized experience includes conducting microbiological or molecular biological research in the area of fish health; collecting and analyzing fish related samples for microbiological assays; summarizing experimental research results for use in scientific publications; and ensuring laboratory safety by conducting inspections and monitoring hazardous waste disposal.

Selective Placement Factor(s): In addition to the specialized experience requirement listed above, this position has a selective placement factor(s):

Applicant must be able to translate documentation from English to Spanish and from Spanish to English.
