Summary

This position is located in the Plant Genetic Resources Unit (PGRU) located in Geneva, NY and serves as the curator for the vegetable seed crops collection providing technical direction and guidance in preserving, regenerating and producing high quality germplasm and conducting research on the maintenance, genetic diversity, taxonomy, systematics, characterization, enhancement, and evaluation of germplasm.

Duties

Help

Major Duties may include, but are not limited to:
Working and cooperating with other scientists in carrying out the mission of the PGRU including acquisition, maintenance, characterization, evaluation, and distribution of vegetable genetic resources and associated information to scientists and other users throughout the United States and the world.

In coordination with supervisor, plans and executes the long-range goals of the PGRU vegetable germplasm project including preserving, propagating, characterizing and distributing genetically-pure, vigorous, disease-free seed of cultivated and wild active collections.

Collects and acquires new genetic resources of vegetable germplasm to enrich the existing collection base in response to high priority needs expressed by users and others.

Plans, conducts, and reports research on genetic diversity, population genetic structure, systematics, taxonomy, plant biology, regeneration characteristics, nutritional quality, and other desirable traits, and seed quality and longevity during storage of vegetable germplasm.

Coordinates effectively with the Germplasm Resources Information Network (GRINGlobal) personnel to utilize and disseminate information and germplasm of the cultivated and wild vegetable active collection.

Coordinates activities with other research and service scientists in the National Plant Germplasm System (NPGS).

Provides technical and administrative supervision.

This is a mixed position combining service (75%), research (15%) and supervisory activities (10%).

Operates location vehicles in order to engage in field and greenhouse activities, visit collaborators, attend meetings and conferences, and carry out other related activities.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements:
0440-Genetics:
Degree: genetics; or one of the basic biological sciences that included at least 9 semester hours in genetics.

0471-Agronomy:
1.  Degree: agronomy; or related discipline of science that included at least 30 semester hours of course work in the basic plant sciences, including at least 15 semester hours in agronomic subjects, such as those dealing with plant breeding, crop production, and soil and crop management.
OR
2.  Combination of education and experience: at least 30 semester hours in the basic plant sciences, including a minimum of 15 semester hours in agronomic subjects, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

0401-Molecular Biology:
1.  Degree: biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position.
OR
2.  Combination of education and experience: Courses equivalent to a major, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

Additional Requirements:

In addition to meeting the basic requirements described above, applicants must also meet additional qualification requirements as stated below.

GS-12: 1 year specialized experience equivalent to atleast the GS-11 in Federal service.  Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. The specialized experience requirements for the GS-12 are:
-Experience conducting research in the area of plant genetic diversity, seed regeneration, seed and fruit quality, and/or nutritional quality of field and greenhouse crops; AND
-Experience in managing crops such as vegetables, plants, etc., in the field and greenhouse; AND
-Experience reporting research results, giving oral talks or poster presentations in the area of plant genetic diversity, seed regeneration, seed and fruit quality, and/or nutritional quality of field and greenhouse crops; AND
-Experience coordinating curation activities with other scientists and users.

GS-13:  1 year specialized experience equivalent to atleast the GS-12 in Federal service. Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. The specialized experience requirements for the GS-13 are:
-Experience in identifying issues and developing and conducting independent research to address them, especially in the area of characterizing and evaluating genetic diversity, seed regeneration, seed and fruit quality, and/or nutritional quality for vegetable crops; AND
-Experience in acquiring, managing and conserving vegetable genetic resources in the field and greenhouse; AND
- Experience in reporting research results, giving oral talks or poster presentations in the area of genetic diversity, seed regeneration, seed and fruit quality, and/or nutritional quality of vegetable crops; AND
-Experience in coordinating germplasm characterization and development activities with other scientists and users; AND
- Experience in coordinating domestic and/or international collaborators from multiple organizations and scientific discipline for conducting collection, conservation, characterization and other research on genetic resources of vegetable crops.
