Summary

This position is located in the Agricultural Research Service, Tropical Crop and Germplasm Research Unit with one vacancy in St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands.

The mission of the Germplasm Introduction Research Unit (GIRU) is to grow sorghum and corn under quarantine conditions and to produce disease-free seeds for exportation to the United States.

Duties

Help

The incumbent is responsible for providing technical support to and performing a variety of duties in support of the maintenance and regeneration of plant germplasm.

Major Duties may include, but are not limited to:


Applying fertilizers, insecticides, herbicides; establishing/maintaining the irrigation system to experimental plots; and solving minor equipment failures.

Harvesting, threshing, cleaning, treating with fungicide and/or insecticides and packs and sending grain seeds.

Collecting a variety of data including determination of stand density, dates and duration of flowering and measurements of plant growth, plant morphological descriptor notes, and pollination data.

Operating and maintaining field equipment such as balances, sprayers, mowers, light tractors, all-terrain vehicles, trucks, and irrigation pumps/equipment.

Maintains log of planning plot usage and cultural practices.

The work involves risks or discomforts which require special safety precautions when working around moving parts and machines, or when exposed to irritant chemicals.  Incumbent is required to use protective clothing or gear such as masks, gowns, goggles, gloves, etc.  When working in the field, incumbent is exposed to moderate discomforts such as noise and adverse weather.

Qualifications

Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement including the following specialized experience and/or education, as identified below.

At the GS-05:

Specialized Experience:  Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled.  Specialized experience must be described for each grade level advertised.  The specialized experience requirements for this position are:

Qualifying experience for GS-5 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-4 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience assisting in maintaining, planting, and harvesting experimental plots or grain seeds; assisting with the pollination of crops; and assisting in collecting a variety of field data from crops including their characteristics.

OR

Education:  Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree with major study or at least 24 semester hours in any combination of courses such as biology, chemistry, statistics, entomology, animal husbandry, botany, physics, agriculture, or mathematics.  At least 6 semester hours of courses must have been directly related to the position to be filled. Related degrees include Agronomy, Horticulture, Plant Pathology, Plant Science and Botany.

OR

A combination of education and experience as described above.


At the GS-06:


Specialized Experience: Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. Specialized experience must be described for each grade level advertised. The specialized experience requirements for this position are:

Qualifying experience for GS-6 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-5 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience maintaining, planting, and harvesting experimental plots or grains seeds; performing and documenting pollination of crops; applying fertilizers, insecticides, or herbicides; and collecting a variety of field data from crops including their characteristics.

OR

Education:  Successfully completed (1) full year of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Master’s or equivalent graduate degree, if directly related to the position.  Related degrees include Agronomy, Horticulture, Plant Pathology, Plant Science and Botany.

OR

A combination of education and experience as described above.
