Duties

Help

GQSRU conducts basic and applied research to identify the physical and biochemical components that determine grain quality. GQSRU’s research focuses on hard winter wheat and grain sorghum.

The incumbent of this position will actively participate in one or more phases of the research process by performing a variety of complex technical duties in a laboratory and field environment working with cereal grains and flours.

Major Duties may include, but are not limited to:

  • Processing and chemically and physically evaluating grain samples for composition and end-use quality.
  • Testing new and established methods and techniques for grain analysis.
  • Identifying chemical and physical properties from grain and flour samples in a laboratory environment.
  • Keeping exact, detailed records of experimental data. Tabulating, statistically analyzing and summarizing data using personal computers and software packages.
  • Interpreting and documents findings by preparing information to be included in manuscripts or preparing reports summarizing progress or results of research.
  • May occasionally collect grain samples in a field environment.

Physical Demands

The work requires some physical exertion, such as regular and recurring walking or bending. In many situations the duration of the activity (such as most of a work day) contributes to the arduous nature of the job. In other situations, there may be special requirements for agility or dexterity such as exceptional hand/eye coordination.

Work Environment

The work involves regular and recurring moderate risks or discomforts which require special safety precautions, e.g., working with contagious diseases or irritant chemicals or working outdoors. The employee is required to use protective clothing such as gowns, coats, boots, goggles, gloves.

At the GS-07

Qualifying experience for GS- 7 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-6 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience participating in a research project which includes collecting and evaluating grains samples; preparing samples for scientific study; and preparing summaries of experimental data findings.

OR

Education: One full year of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a masters or equivalent graduate degree, if directly related. Related degrees include Biology, Agricultural Science, Chemistry, or other science degree that included chemical and biological characterization of samples.

OR

A combination of specialized experience and graduate level education directly related to the work of the position as stated above.

At the GS-08

Qualifying experience for GS-8 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-7 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience conducting a research project which includes collecting and evaluating grain samples; modifying current analytical methods; preparing samples for scientific study; and analyzing data and preparing summaries of experimental data findings.

OR

Education: Two full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a masters or equivalent graduate degree, if directly related. Related degrees include Biology, Agricultural Science, Chemistry, or other science degree that included chemical and biological characterization of samples.

OR

An appropriate combination of specialized experience and graduate level education directly related to the work of the position as stated above.
