Summary

This position is located in the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), Agricultural Research Service (ARS), Invasive Species and Pollinator Health Research Unit, located in Albany, CA.

The incumbent of this position will support a Research Entomologist conducting research on biological control of invasive terrestrial and aquatic weeds using insects as biological control agents.

Duties

Help

Major Duties may include, but are not limited to:

  • Developing and implementing methods to identify, collect and rear insects of potential importance in biological control of invasive plants or other plant-feeding insects.
  • Determining the taxonomic status of both targeted invasive plant species and selected insects as candidate natural enemies.
  • Selecting methods and procedures that are most appropriate for the research goals, including modification of protocols when necessary.
  • Calibrating, operating, and maintaining specialized equipment for monitoring of experimental environments in order to ensure proper conditions for maintaining colonies of non-native insects.
  • Operating computers in order to accomplish the following: performing statistical analysis; making contributions to reports/manuscripts; generating data summaries; and creating summary graphics.

Qualifications

Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement including the following specialized experience and/or education, as identified below.

Basic Requirements:

To qualify at the 0414 series:

Degree: Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor’s degree or higher degree in entomology; or a related discipline of the chemical, biological or physical sciences that included at least 16 semester hours in entomology.

OR

Combination of education and experience: Courses equivalent to a major that included course work as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

In addition to the basic requirement above, all applicants must meet the following minimum qualifications:

Specialized Experience: Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. Specialized experience must be described for each grade level advertised. The specialized experience requirements for this position are:

At the GS-09:

Qualifying experience for GS-09 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-07 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience collecting and maintaining specimens of insects and invasive or other plant species; maintaining laboratory notebooks and records of experimental data; and operating specialized equipment for monitoring insect colonies.

OR

Education: 2 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a masters degree or masters or equivalent graduate degree, if related. Related degrees may include Entomology, Plant Sciences, Ecology, or Biology or other degrees if related to the work of this position.

OR

A combination of education and experience as described above.

At the GS-11:

Qualifying experience for GS-11 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-09 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience developing and evaluating insects as biological control agents of weeds that threaten natural resources; organizing and leading experiments related to the collection and maintenance of specimens of insects and invasive plant species; maintaining laboratory notebooks and records of experimental data; and operating specialized equipment for monitoring insect colonies.

OR

Education: 3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree. Related degrees may include Entomology, Plant Sciences, Ecology, or Biology or other degrees if related to the work of this position.

OR

A combination of education and experience as described above.
