Help
  • You will prepare worksites, such as set up scaffolds, ladders, stands, etc.
  • You will set up the job for the journey level tradesperson with related materials and equipment as designated by the journey level trades person.
  • You will learn to perform more advanced work of the trade as a means of developing trade skills and gaining knowledge of the trade.
  • You will pick up all tools and equipment after completion of projects or assignments.
  • You will properly clean and store all tools and equipment used for projects.
  • You will keep worksites clean and in an orderly fashion on a daily basis.

  • You must sign a 2 yr. agreement to work within the Department of Navy for 2 yrs. after completion of the 4 year apprentice program.
  • Work requires considerable walking, stooping, squatting, kneeling, crouching, standing, climbing, bending, stretching, pulling, and working in cramped and awkward positions for long periods of time.
  • Work requires arduous physical exertion. Work pace may be rapid for extended periods. Heavy exertion may be required at frequent intervals.
  • Within the Department of Defense (DoD), the appointment of retired military members within 180 days immediately following retirement date to a civilian position is subject to the provisions of 5 United States Code 3326.
  • You will be required to obtain and maintain an interim and/or final security clearance prior to entrance on duty. Failure to obtain and maintain the required level of clearance may result in the withdrawal of a job offer or removal.
  • You will be required to successfully complete a pre-appointment physical examination.
  • Successful completion of a pre-employment drug test (including marijuana) is required. A tentative offer of employment will be rescinded if you fail to report to the drug test appointment or pass the test. You will be subject to random testing.

Qualifications

Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most trade and labor occupations, you must show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time.

This job has a screen-out element which will be used to determine minimum eligibility for this job. Applicants who do not meet the screen-out element(s) will be found ineligible. The Screen-out Element for this position is: LIKELIHOOD OF SUCCESS IN ASSIGNMENTS WHICH REQUIRE INTEREST, MOTIVATION, AND READINESS TO DO SIMPLE TASKS. You must be able and willing to accept employment as a worker-trainee in a four year apprentice program in any trade listed on the announcement initially performing simple and routine work upon close supervision of a journey level trades person, and progressively learning to perform more advanced work of a trade as a means of developing trade skills and gaining knowledge of a trade. Typical simple and routine work includes preparing and gathering necessary tools and equipment for projects or assignments for the day, preparing work sites such as setting up scaffolds and ladders, and setting up the job for the journey level trades person with related materials and equipment as designated by the journey level trades person.

Basis of Rating: Anyone applying for these positions must take and pass a no-fee written examination with a score of 70% or higher. The written examination will cover all positions and will test for reading comprehension, sentence skills, levels of English proficiency language use, arithmetic, elementary algebra, and college-level mathematics. You will be notified in writing of the day and time you are scheduled to take the test. The written notification of your scheduled testing will also serve as your admission into the testing site.

After successful completion of the entry-level written examination, you will be called into a panel of journey level tradespersons for an interview. If selected, you will be notified by mail to start the hiring process and medical examination.

These positions have various promotion potential to either WG-09 or WG-10 depending on series. You may be non-competitively promoted to the full performance level after meeting all regulatory requirements, and upon the recommendation of management. Promotion is neither implied nor guaranteed. You will spend up to 4 yrs. as an entry level trades person. After successfully completing all required training and experience, you will progress to the journey level. Continued employment and advancement requires satisfactory completion of classroom training and work experience. College level classroom training may include, but will not be limited to, trade skills and trade related mathematics (e.g. algebra, geometry, trigonometry), introductory sciences (e.g. metallurgy, electrical theory), and trade drawings and blueprints. You may be promoted after meeting all requirements, and upon the recommendation of management. Promotion is neither implied nor guaranteed. You are required to receive 1,800 hrs. of on-the-job training yearly under the supervision of a journey level tradesperson. FRC-SW will make advance payment directly to the approved academic training program for the following: educational costs, tuition, materials required for lab classes, health fees and any other authorized costs. Additional expenses incurred for school (parking permits/tickets, books, transportation expenses to and from school, etc.) will be the responsibility of the Apprentice. You will be required to sign an agreement to work within the Department of Navy for 2 yrs. after completion of the program.

Starting Salary will be determined based on series accepted.

This position is covered by the Department of Defense Priority Placement Program.
