Duties

Major Duties:
As a Research Plant Physiologist the incumbent will be responsible for, but not limited to:

  • Develop high yielding germplasm and cultivars of leafy green vegetables with optimal levels of nutrients;
  • Identify and study physiological, biochemical, and molecular traits, markers, and genes for the improvement of the contents of vitamins, minerals, phytonutrients, and antioxidants in leafy vegetables;
  • Investigate the interactions among different nutrients and external/gut microbiomes for the nutrient metabolism, bioavailability, absorption, efficacy, and utilization for better human nutrition and health;
  • Study the effects of genotype by environment interactions on nutrient levels and microbiome composition in vegetables;
  • Collaborate in research on the interactions of nutrients/microbiomes with shelf-life, diseases, insects, abiotic stresses, and human pathogens;
  • Examine in collaborative studies the effects of environment on microbiota found on vegetables; and
  • Determine in collaborative studies how consumption of food from these cultivars may impact human metabolism, including changes in gut microbiota.

Qualifications

Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by 11:59 pm Eastern Time on the closing date of the announcement including the following specialized experience and/or education, as identified by grade level.

Your education and experience will be evaluated against all qualification requirements (basic and any additional requirements) listed below.

Graduate education must be directly related to the work of the position and must have equipped you with the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work.

Basic Requirements:
Degree:
botany or plant physiology; or a related scientific discipline that included at least 10 semester hours in plant physiology.

Evaluation of Education:
The 10-semester-hour requirement in plant physiology is specific. Course work is qualifying if it dealt with plant physiology, some phase of plant physiology, or methods and techniques applied in plant physiology work. Other course work in borderline areas should be evaluated on the basis of content.


Additional Requirements: 

GS-12: Applicants must demonstrate at least one full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 grade level in the Federal service or possess a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree or possess an equivalent combination of graduate level education and experience. Graduate education must be directly related to the work of the position and must have equipped applicants with the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work.

Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. The specialized experience requirements for the GS-12 level of this position are:

Experience conducting laboratory, controlled environment, and field plot research in the area of plant nutrition and plant genetics, or plant nutrition-microbial interactions.

GS-13: Applicants must demonstrate at least one full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-12 grade level in the Federal service. Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. The specialized experience requirements for the GS-13 level of this position are:

Experience conducting laboratory, controlled environment, and field plot research in the area of genotype-environment effects on plant yield and plant nutrient content.
