Duties

Help

Receives files from an external source, verifies them against an inventory list with SHA-1 checksums and imports the files into temporary storage. This may be done via hard drives, data tapes or the Internet.

Operates a tape robotic system designed to read files from various data tapes. Uses, understands and modifies scripts which control the data tape robot, queries a database, analyzes the retrieved files and creates an XML  document to facilitate ingest of the file and its derivatives into the deep archive.

Monitors the progress of all projects and gives timely reports to their supervisor. Generates searchable log files and/or database entries for all file transactions for later auditing.  Loads tapes into the data tape robot and executes command line scripts to initiate transfers from the tape robot. Ensures that the files ingest correctly and when one fails takes appropriate action to see that the problem is addressed.

Operator will be proficient with the following systems: data tape robotic systems, file transcoding systems and MySQL.

On request retrieves preservation files from the deep archive, transcodes them to the requested file format, determines that the files are complete & of an acceptable quality, and delivers the files to the client via a prearranged method (i.e. Internet, hard drive, tape).

Assists in planning workflows for new projects with the other digital file staff; and monitors actual performance against projections and gives timely reports of the same.

Writes up discrepancy reports and interacts with maintenance staff to see that all equipment is serviceable, so that digital preservation targets are consistently met and that machine downtime is minimized.

Qualifications

Applicants must have had progressively responsible experience and training sufficient in scope and quality to furnish them with an acceptable level of the following knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the duties of the position without more than normal supervision.

Ability to analyze, organize, plan and carry out file-based activities in a professional setting.**

Knowledge of the principles, concepts and techniques of file-based media transcoding activities in a professional setting.**

Ability to manage data and tables in a database.

Ability to coordinate and assist in planning workflows for new projects.

Ability to communicate effectively other than in writing.

Additional information

The salary range indicated reflects the locality pay adjustments for the Washington, D.C., Metropolitan area.

The incumbent of this position will work a flextime work schedule.

Relocation expenses will not be authorized for the person(s) selected under this vacancy announcement.

Although it is the Library's policy to afford the maximum pay benefit to employees when setting rates of pay, a new appointee who has had no previous Federal service will generally be paid the minimum step of the grade.
