Duties

Help
  • Effectively interviews and interacts with clientele to establish user needs and requirements. Thoroughly analyzes user requirements; appropriately locates and selects appropriate information resources .
  • Effectively establishes internal procurement and quality processes to ensure appropriate accountability for library acquisitions.
  • Appropriately assists with bindery preparation , shelf maintenance, circulation of periodicals, records maintenance, equipment maintenance and servicing , supply monitoring and ordering, and coordination with other sections of the library
  • Effectively conducts group tours for new students and faculty. Provides appropriate individual and group instruction to students on library research, bibliographic format, and techniques
  • Appropriately eval uates methods and practices within the field of library and information science.. Effectively reviews professional library literature to stay abreast of library rel ated technology , i ssues, and opportunities.

Qualifications

BASIC REQUIREMENTS:

EDUCATION: Completion of one (1) full academic year of graduate study in library science in an accredited college or university, in addition to completion of all work required for a bachelor's degree. NOTE: You must submit transcripts with your application.

OR

A total of at least five (5) years of a combination of college-level education, training, and experience. To qualify on this basis, the applicant must establish conclusively that the education, training, and experience provided a knowledge and understanding of the theories, principles, and techniques of professional librarianship; knowledge of literature resources; and the knowledge and abilities essential for providing effective library and information services. NOTE: You must submit transcripts with your application.

IN ADDITION TO THE BASIC REQUIREMENTS ABOVE, YOU MUST MEET ONE OF THE FOLLOWING REQUIREMENTS:

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: One year of specialized experience is experience equivalent to the GS-07 level or other pay systems which includes knowledge of the policies, procedures, systems and interrelationships of the library, the library's databases and capabilities of post-processing data source. Knowledge of on-line databases searching and research techniques and capabilities of post-processing to meet user requirements. Skills and knowledge in utilizing computer databases containing various reference materials to which the costumer seeks access. Knowledge of the internet, information systems and the creation of web documents to maintain, revise and expand the library's website.

OR

EDUCATION: Two full years of progressively higher level graduate education or master's in library science or equivalent graduate degree, e.g., LL.B. or J.D., related to the position. NOTE: You must submit transcripts with your application.

OR

Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. NOTE: You must submit a copy of official transcripts.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas:

1 . Skill in one or more major functional areas of library science, to include knowledge of multi-information sources and access points (such as MOSAIC, WAIS, WWW, STN) and electronic information access , development , and dissemination (INTERNET, LANs, WANs , SCANNING TECHNOLOGIES , )
2. Knowledge of specific subject-matter field, specialized subject or field of endeavor related to t he mission of the serviced organization
3 . Ability to maintain good working relations
4. Knowledge of on - line database searching and research techniques, and capabilities of post-processing to meet user requirements.
5. Familiarity with language(s) appropriate to the position
6. Ability to communicate in writing
7. Ability to communicate orally

PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.

VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
