Duties

Help

The incumbent provides direction to a professional and technical staff with continuing responsibility for ensuring program development is consistent with the mission, vision, and goals.

The Chief Technology Officer serves as a principal advisor to the Assistant Secretary and CIO for the Office of Information and Technology and plays a key management role within OIT with responsibility for providing expert, high-level technical advice and counsel to Assistant Secretary and CIO, executives, stakeholders, and users on matters that affect or relate to future and existing IT infrastructure, functions and programs. The CTO is the IT expert, and leverages expertise and knowledge of the changing technological environment of VA to accomplish OIT's mission. The responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

a) Designs the technical vision to meet VA's strategic business goals and recommends the appropriate innovative technology solutions in compliance with the policies and directives issued by the Assistant Secretary and CIO.

b) Designs, codifies and makes improvements to the overall strategy for technical use and life-cycle management.

c) Spearheads programs that increase OIT's ability to serve Veterans and customers through digital, mobile, and cloud services.

d) Determines feasibility and impact of project proposals, application and database designs, and package implementations with respect to systems architecture and strategy.

e) Monitors and assesses information system operations to include systems planning, integration and requirements design, network architecture, cybersecurity, configuration management, etc.
