Duties

Help

This position is part of the Imperial National Wildlife Refuge. As a Maintenance Worker you will be responsible for a variety of maintenance and repair work at the Refuge.

The duties of the position include but are not limited to:

  • Repairing vehicles by cleaning, installing, or replacing worn or defective parts
  • Performing routine preventive maintenance on heating systems and refrigeration and air-conditioning units
  • Operating heavy equipment
  • Maintaining and repairing electrical systems
  • Planning and performing welding and sheet metal construction
  • Using and maintaining tools and equipment, recording inventory and maintenance, and reporting or documenting equipment damage or loss

Although no specific amount of experience, education or training is required, applicants must meet a minimum level of ability in relation to the position and the Assessment Questionnaire in order to be rated qualified for consideration. To be qualified candidates must meet any screen out element(s) listed at an "acceptable" level, and must achieve an average rating of at least "acceptable" on all of the elements. Only education, training, or experience acquired before the closing date will be considered.

Telework: FWS has determined that the duties of this position are not suitable for telework.

Relocation Expenses: Relocation expenses will be paid; discretionary entitlements will not be paid.

Physical Demands: Makes repairs inside and outside and in hard-to-reach, uncomfortable places. Worker must stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb, stretch, and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions, and frequently lifts parts and equipment weighing up to 40 pounds or over with assistance. Employee uses lifting and safety equipment as necessary.

Work Environment: Work is performed indoors and outdoors in adverse weather conditions, near running water, and in locations presenting noise, fumes, or dusty, greasy, dirty environments. Employee works around moving vehicles and equipment. To reduce dangers from working hazards, the employee follows prescribed safety practices and uses safety equipment such as safety glasses, hard-toe shoes, respirators, hard hats, and fire retardant gloves. Duties are performed in a manner consistent with U.S. Fish and Wildlife safety policies.
