As a Biological Science Technician, you will be responsible for assisting one or more professional biologists in completing all phases of a fishery biological study or project of significant scope and duration to include project planning, logistical arrangements, field work, correlation and analysis of data, and completion of reports or other documents related to the project.
Assisting in the planning of biological surveys and multifaceted studies by contributing ideas, determining research methods, establishing practical procedures for accomplishing and reporting the work.
Identifying, capturing, handling, and tagging juvenile and adult resident freshwater and anadromous fish species; assessing readings, measurements, tests and observations taken; and collecting biological and water resource data to determine actual and potential impact on fishery resources from water development projects.
Developing and using automated databases to enter, organize and perform preliminary analysis of collected field data, and using standard statistical methods in preparation of fisheries reports; preparing segments of recurring reports.
Providing work direction and guidance to lower graded technicians and volunteers in gathering field data.
Physical Demands: Work requires some physical exertion, such as regular and recurring running, walking, or bending; walking or climbing over rocky areas, through plowed fields or other uneven surfaces, through dense vegetation, and in mountainous terrain; climbing ladders or scaffolds to observe, collect, or record research data; or swimming and wading in swift cold water.
Work Environment: Work is performed in an office and outdoors. Exposure to adverse weather conditions or weather extremes such as cold, dampness, humidity and/or insects are often encountered in the performance of the outdoor work. Safety precautions and protective clothing or gear are required when working around water, and with chemicals and equipment. Work occasionally requires immersion in swift cold water for long periods of time.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants mut meet one of the following:
A. I have one year of full-time specialized experience equivalent to the GS-5 grade level in the federal service, or equivalent non-Federal experience. Specialized experience is defined as working with crews, mostly independently, 1) identifying and monitoring number and distribution of fish species; 2) conducting stream habitat surveys and/or habitat restoration monitoring; 3) entering data into a central database, ensuring quality assurance and control.
B. I have successful completed one-half year (9 semester or equivalent) of graduate education, in an accredited college or university, that included courses directly related to the occupation, such as fishery biology, ichthyology, limnology, aquaculture, etc. which has equipped me with the knowledge, skills and ability to successfully perform the duties of this position at grade GS-6, as described.
C. I have a combination of specialized experience and education as described above, when prorated, combine to meet the qualification requirements of this position. Experience and education are each computed as percentages of their respective requirements and must equal at least 100 percent when combined.
