Summary

This position is part of the Maui National Wildlife Refuge Complex. As a Biological Science Technician you will be responsible for assisting in planning in surveys, habitat management activities, and controlling and monitoring the impact of development projects on native species.

This is a Term appointment, not-to-exceed 13 months, which can be extended for a total appointment of 4 years.

Duties

Help

  • Assisting in the planning of biological surveys and multifaceted studies by contributing ideas, determining research methods, establishing practical procedures for accomplishing and reporting the work; and providing work direction and guidance to lower graded technicians and volunteers in gathering field data.
  • Identifying, capturing, handling, and tag or collar various wildlife species; assessing readings, measurements, tests and observations taken; and collecting biological data to determine actual and potential impact on resources.
  • Developing and using automated databases to enter, organize and perform preliminary analysis of collected field data, and using standard statistical methods in preparation of reports.

  • Work Schedule: Work may require working evenings, weekends and holidays.
  • Must possess or be able to obtain and maintain USFWS approved certifications within 6 months of employment for All-Terrain Vehicle (ATV) , Utility-terrain vehicle (UTV) Certification and Pesticide Certification.
  • A valid state driver's license is required in order to comply with state and federal regulations and service policies for operating motor vehicles with a GVW less than 26,000 pounds.

Qualifications

Only experience and education obtained by 09/17/2018

To qualify at the GS-06 level, if you fulfill one of the following qualification requirements:

  1. Have 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-5 grade level or higher in the Federal service. Specialized experience in defined as: 1)conducting field investigations, studies and surveys; 2) radio tagging; 3) collecting field data on wildlife and their habitat; 4) identify invasive plant species and assist in control methods; 5) collect, record, and organize biological data; OR
  2. Have successful completed one-half year (9 semester/13.5 quarter hours or the school's equivalent) of graduate education, in an accredited college or university, that included courses directly related to the occupation, such as such as wildlife management, ornithology, mammalogy, herpetology, avian ecology, etc. Submit a copy of your transcripts to qualify on education.; OR
  3. A combination of specialized experience (as in A above) and education (as in B above), when prorated, combine to meet the qualification requirements of this position. Experience and education are each computed as percentages of their requirements and must equal 100 percent when combined. Only
    education beyond the second year is creditable to meet this standard.

  • Ability to capture, handle, and tag or collar various wildlife.
  • Ability to identify species from pictures, field guides, dichotomous keys, and written descriptions, and monitors them in riparian, upland, and/or coastal habitats.
  • Knowledge of plant species specific to the designated survey areas sufficient to complete the field investigation and gather required data within the timeframe allotted.
  • Ability to follow detailed sampling and laboratory procedures and recognize departures from established quality control and quality assurance guidelines.
  • Ability to communicate orally in order to meet and exchange information with individuals encountered in the scope of regular duties.
