Summary

This position is with the USDA Forest Serivce, Alaska Region (R10), Tongass National Forest, Juneau Ranger District, located at the Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center in Juneau, Alaska.

This is a permanent, seasonal position with 13 pay periods of guaranteed pay status and 13 pay periods of nonpay status each calendar year. Additional periods of work may be available, depending on budget and workload.

Salary may be adjusted to include a Cost of Living Allowance (COLA). See the OPM website at: http://www.opm.gov/oca/cola/index.asp for additional information about the continuation of COLA after December 31, 2012.

Employees who transfer to the Alaska Region from the continental United States (CONUS) are required to sign FS-R10-6500-0002, Initial Overseas Employment Agreement before the hiring process is complete. This form documents the employee’s agreement to serve 12 months in an overseas location in return for the Government’s agreement to pay all available transfer of station entitlements for the transfer to Alaska and at least a partially-funded return to the CONUS point of hire. Employees who transfer to another Government position will generally receive all available transfer of station entitlements.

Help

The Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center is located on the Juneau Ranger District. In addition to the center there are parking lots, a bus shelter, a covered pavilion, information kiosk, restrooms, sidewalks, and several trails. Trails in the vicinity include Photo Point Trail, Steep Creek wildlife viewing trail, Trail of Time, East Glacier, Moraine Ecology, and the most popular trail on the Tongass National Forest, the Nugget Falls trail.

With approximately 550,000 visitors each summer between May and September, Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center complex is the most visited site in Alaska for its size, attracting a broad diversity of visitors from around the globe. An excellent understanding of interpretation and visitor services is required. These positions will be part of our team of permanent and temporary employees and volunteers who manage the Visitor Center and the surrounding recreation area.

Duties include developing and delivering interpretive products (natural and cultural), leading interpretive talks, answering questions, operating a variety of audiovisual equipment, maintaining stock of environmental education materials, equipment, and supplies, providing orientation and regulatory information, monitoring activities of special use permits for recreational activities, and providing emergency response to injuries or search and rescues.

Must be a high school graduate or equivalent.

Must be 18 years of age.

Qualifications

1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least GS-4. Specialized experience is defined as: Answering visitor inquiries; providing information on rules, regulations, and program activities; and conducting interpretive talks, conservation education programs, and facility tours. Checking the usage and condition of public use areas, visitor centers, restrooms, trails, and other recreation areas for safety, fire, sanitation and maintenance reasons; and maintaining the supply of educational materials and items for distribution.

OR

A 4-year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor's degree with 24 semester hours of related course work, in any of the following: natural resource management, natural sciences, earth sciences, history, archeology, anthropology, park and recreation management, law enforcement/police science, social sciences, museum sciences, business administration, public administration, behavioral sciences, sociology, or other closely related subjects pertinent to the management and protection of natural and cultural resources. Course work in fields other than those specified may be accepted if it clearly provides applicants with the background of knowledge and skills necessary for successful job performance in the position to be filled.

An equivalent combination of education and experience is qualifying for which both education and experience are acceptable.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Work Experience: Your resume must clearly document the following for each block of work experience the beginning month and year the work assignment started and ended; the hours worked per week; position title, and series and grade if applicable; and description of duties performed. This information must be provided for each temporary or seasonal appointment/work assignment and must be clearly documented as a separate block of time. Incomplete applications or those that provide vague and/or conflicting information may not be evaluated for consideration.

Concurrent Experience: Concurrent experience in more than one position: If any of your positions included mixed duties, for example Forestry Technician timber and fire experience, please indicate the start and end dates and approximate percent of time you spent performing each different type of duty.

Part-Time or Unpaid Experience: Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience regardless of whether compensation was received or whether the experience was gained in a part-time or full-time occupation. Full-time work is generally considered to be 35 to 40 hours of work per week.
