Summary

This position is located in the Preservation/Restoration Unit of the Collections Division of the National Air and Space Museum (NASM). The Unit is responsible for protecting the National Collections of Aeronautics and Space Artifacts through proper and authentic preservation and restoration techniques and for the preparation of the artifacts for the anticipated Transformation/Revitalization of the Washington, DC location.  The incumbent serves as a skilled member of the preservation/restoration team and works under the supervision of the Foreperson, Preservation/Restoration Unit.

Duties

Help
  • Disassembles, repairs, and reassembles, and in some cases, designs and manufactures new parts of aeronautics and space artifacts.
  • Plans and designs fabrication of forms, jigs, cradles, dollies and slings to allow safe handling of artifacts during the restoration process.
  • Performs all types of specimen-handling operations including those that require the operation of forklifts hoists, small cranes, Aerial Work Platforms, scissor lifts, and SI passenger vehicles/box trucks.
  • Reviews and maintains a clear, concise, and detailed written report of each restoration project.

Qualifications

Experience:

GS-09: You qualify for this position if you possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-7 level in the Federal Service or comparable pay band system.  For this position specialized experience is defined as experience: 1) applying conservation, preservation or restoration techniques to technical, industrial and/or transportation or aerospace equipment; 2) documenting project progress or completion summary; 3) moving and rigging of aircraft, spacecraft, and/or aerospace artifact. 

GS-11: You qualify for this position if you possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-9 level in the Federal Servicor comparable pay band system.  For this position specialized experience is defined as experience: 1) applying conservation, preservation or restoration techniques to technical, industrial and/or transportation or aerospace equipment; 2) working projects on an independent level, including resource planning (such as materials and time estimates; 3) moving and rigging of aircraft, spacecraft, and/or aerospace artifact; 4) documenting project progress or completion summary; 5) leading lesser experienced museum specialists. 

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Part-time and/or unpaid experience related to this position will be considered to determine the total number of years and months of experience. Be sure to note the number of paid or unpaid hours worked each week.

Education

Education can be substituted for experience at the GS-09 only.

GS-09: Or Education: Master's degree or equivalent graduate degree or two full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's degree or equivalent graduate degree related to the position.

Or a Combination: Education and experience may be combined to meet the basic qualifications; for example, a half year of experience and a half year of graduate education beyond the first year in the field may be qualifying.

How you will be evaluated

You will be evaluated for this job based on how well you meet the qualifications above.

Your application will be evaluated first for the basic qualifications described above.  The applications that meet the basic qualifications will be evaluated further against the following criteria:

Knowledge of the assembly and operations of aircraft air frames and engines.

Knowledge of restoration techniques to include woodworking, metal working, welding, painting and fabric working.

Knowledge of the use of hand and power tools, spray booth equipment, and cleaning equipment.

Ability to operate a forklift or similar material handling equipment.

Skill in using computers to document the restoration projects.
