This position is opened to all individuals who are recent graduates who have completed, within the previous two years, a QUALIFYING associates, bachelors, masters, professional, doctorate, vocational or technical degree or certificate from a qualifying educational institution, AND Preference eligible veterans who are recent graduates, or who were not able to apply within the two years after receiving the degree, due military service.
Performs laboratory tasks associated with molecular genetic studies of fish and wildlife populations to determine their species identity and genetic relationships. Interprets data to identify and evaluate properties of DNA of interest in test results
Performs sample analyses employing appropriate genetic techniques, adherence to established protocols for sample preparation and analysis, and other related protocols necessary to obtain valid data according to established principles and procedures.
Operates, configures, and maintains specialized molecular population genetics laboratory equipment such as thermocyclers, Real-Time thermocyclers, automated DNA sequencers, electrophoresis gels, centrifuges, and other laboratory equipment
Conducts routine examination of forensic evidence samples, following all Technical Protocols for handling and processing of evidence, data interpretation and reporting to maintain sample integrity and traceability.
Applies genetic and biological data to life history and biology of terrestrial and/or aquatic organisms to understand population characteristics and dynamics.
Maintains familiarity with technical literature regarding genetic analyses and protocols as they pertain to wild animal populations protected by US laws and international treaties.
Develops and maintains organized database of biological and genetic data for samples being analyzed to facilitate tracking of samples, progress, and data analysis.
Performs statistical analyses and generates graphical representations of study results, maintains results in databases, and incorporates these data into written reports, scientific publications, and oral presentations.

A. Completion of a 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree in a field of study that demonstrates the competencies required by this position with either (1) a grade point average (GPA) of
3.0 based on a 4.0 scale; (2) a 3.5 GPA based on a 4.0 scale for all required courses completed in a qualifying major field of study at either the time of application or during the last two years of your undergraduate curriculum; (3) class standing of upper third of the graduating class in the college, university, or a major subdivision of the college; or, (4) membership in a National Scholastic Honor Society certified by the Association of College Honor Societies, excluding freshman honor societies; OR
B. One full year of graduate level education in an accredited or pre-accredited college or university in one of the following related fields agronomy, horticulture, animal, dairy, or poultry husbandry, entomology, microbiology, plant pathology, chemistry, molecular and cellular biology, and physiology that involved cross-training in genetics is qualifying, provided it placed sufficient emphasis on genetics. Must submit transcripts.. The education must demonstrate the competencies necessary to do the work of the position ; OR
C. One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-05 grade level in the Federal service that demonstrates your ability to operating genetics laboratory equipment; knowledge and skill in molecular genetics techniques and principles; using sample and genotype databases; knowledge of the biology of North American terrestrial and aquatic species; skill in written and oral communication to ensure the quality of technical reports and presentations ; OR
D. A combination of education and experience as listed above.
You may qualify at the GS-09 level, if you fulfill one of the following qualification requirements:
One year of specialized year of professional experience equivalent to the GS-7 level in the Federal service. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include: using DNA markers and automated DNA analyzers/sequencers to collect genotypic data, gene frequency, and DNA sequence data on populations
of terrestrial or aquatic species; extracting and archiving DNA from fish or wildlife populations, utilizing polymerase chain reaction (PCR) to amplify target genes/sequences; and conducting molecular genetic analyses of fish or wildlife populations; OR
A master's or equivalent graduate degree in an accredited or pre-accredited college or university; or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree; or possession of a LL.B. or J.D degree, if related. Graduate level education must demonstrate the competencies necessary to do the work of the position, examples of qualifying fields that is directly related to genetics, or a curriculum or pattern of training that placed major emphasis on genetics. Graduate study in related fields such as agronomy, horticulture, animal, dairy, or poultry husbandry, entomology, microbiology, plant pathology, chemistry, molecular and cellular biology, and physiology that involved cross-training in genetics is qualifying, provided it placed sufficient emphasis on genetics. Promotion Potential: This position involves a multi-grade career ladder. The major duties listed represent the full performance level of GS-7/9. At lower grade levels, you will perform assignments of a more limited scope and with less independence. You will progressively acquire the background necessary to perform at the full performance level of GS-7/9. Promotion is at the discretion of the supervisor and is contingent upon satisfactory performance, availability of higher level work, and availability of funds.The selectee may be promoted without further competition when all regulatory, qualification, and performance requirements are met. Selection at a lower grade level does not guarantee promotion to the full performance level.
