Physical Demands: Work requires some physical exertion such as bending and walking in terrain that is rough, rocky, mountainous and densely vegetated. Required to lift and carry equipment necessary to efficiently perform the work of the position, and to provide for personal comfort and safety. This can include tools, personal protective equipment, food and water for extended periods of work away from vehicles.

Work Environment: Office work is performed in an adequately lighted, ventilated, cooled and heated area. During fieldwork is subject to cuts and bruises, extreme and adverse weather conditions, and injuries and discomforts from pests and animals. Employee will adhere to all safety rules.

Duties

Help

The incumbent of this position will be required to participate in inventories and monitoring of vegetative habitats/locations as identified, Special Status plant/animal species and their habitats, and noxious or invasive plants. This involves at a minimum, the collection of data on various vegetative types, including riparian/wetland species, movement in the landscape, and cover. The biological vegetation technician would also participate in vegetation community improvement projects such as planting or removing shrubs, trees and grasses; prescribed burns; weed control and monitoring results. The technician would also assist other staff in construction projects such as water developments, fencing, surveys of wildlife and their habitats, etc., and any other duties identified by resources staff needs. He/she would compile and organize survey data, prepare narratives, and report on and create maps and overlays of areas inventoried. The technician would also enter and retrieve data from various automated databases, gather samples, and assist in analyzing those samples. This position requires the use of a motor vehicle (in most cases a four-wheel drive vehicle or UTV).

To qualify at the GS-07 level, have at least one year of qualifying specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade (GS-06) in the Federal Service OR have completed one full year (18 semester hours) of graduate level college education in a field directly related to biological science technician work such as a major study in biology, chemistry, statistics, entomology, animal husbandry, botany, physics, agriculture, or mathematics.

Specialized Experience Requirements:

In order to be rated as qualified for this position, we must be able to determine that you meet the 1 year specialized experience requirement - please be sure to include this information in your resume. To be creditable, this experience must have been equivalent in difficulty and complexity to the next lower grade (GS-06) of the position to be filled.

Examples: Proficient in plant identification and possess a broad knowledge of various monitoring, sampling, and survey methods. Be able to map areas utilizing GIS, read and follow maps, navigate by vehicle and on foot utilizing maps or GPS units, and compile and organize data. Possess a working knowledge of vascular plant biology and understand basic vegetative restoration and manipulation methods and theories.

Selective Placement Factors: This position requires a special qualification that has been determined to be essential to perform the duties and will be used as a screen out element. Those who do not provide evidence they possess the following selective factor(s) will be rated not qualified.

  • Must Posses a Valid State Drivers License

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

For volunteer work you must identify the amount of time worked for each volunteer position including the dates (mm/dd/yy) along with the number of hours worked per week. Please ensure this information is clearly listed on your resume.

You must meet all qualification requirements within 30 days of the closing date of the announcement. Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade requirement in accordance with 5 CFR 300.604. If you are a current Federal employee in the General Schedule (GS) pay plan and applying for a promotion opportunity, you must have completed a minimum of 52 weeks at the next lower grade level in the normal line of progression for the position being filled.

Travel and relocation expenses will not be paid by the Department of the Interior. Any travel, transportation and relocation expenses associated with reporting for duty in this position will be the responsibility of the selected employee.

  • Knowledge of technical methods, and procedures of botany management to plan and accomplish a wide variety of limited projects.
  • Practical knowledge of the basic theories and practices of botany combined with practical experience sufficient to resolve botany related issues.
  • Knowledge in plant identification to include T/E, noxious, invasive, and special status, vegetation monitoring, vegetation manipulation, and project planning and implementation.
  • Knowledge of computer capabilities sufficient to produce reports with graphics, produce simple maps, develop spreadsheets, and enter, retrieve and manipulate data.
  • Ability to safely operate 2 and 4-wheel drive vehicles and ATVs and read maps and use GPS equipment to determine locations.
