About the Position:
The Center for Strategic Leadership at the U.S. Army War College (USAWC) seeks a Professor of Strategic Futures. This is a full-time civilian faculty position USAWC as provided under Title 10 USC 4021. Initial appointment will be three years, with the first two years probationary. The appointment may be renewed in one- to five-year increments thereafter. Salary will be based on the selectee's academic credentials, experience, and professional accomplishments.

Duties

Help
  • Candidate will be in a position to make substantive national-level contributions to the understanding of Strategic Futures as they impact U.S. national security.
  • In particular, global trends, the future operational environment, informational, social, technological, political and economic long-term outlooks and the resultant future strategic implications for the Department of Defense and U.S. Army.
  • Candidate will participate in wargames and workshops, and write and publish on matters of strategic importance related to the implications of strategic futures.
  • Candidate will represent the USAWC at professional conferences, seminars, and meetings; and develop/support USAWC conferences, seminars and meetings.
  • Candidate will be expected to assist in the delivery of curriculum which focuses on strategic futures, to include leading a faculty teaching team for a special 8-month long Futures Seminar elective each academic year.
  • The Futures Seminar is a group of 12-16 Army War College students and faculty who each year assist the Army in examining the implications of a strategic futures issue on the Army.
  • The seminar is given an annual research question and spends 8 months of the academic year studying, researching and ultimately reporting back to the Army with their results.
  • The Professor of Strategic Futures will help facilitate student research, writing and perspectives on the future stressors that will undoubtedly shape the future.
  • Candidate will serve as the USAWC expert on global trends and dynamics that impact the character of future warfare, providing this insight to USAWC faculty and students through lectures, symposia, participation in curriculum and course review.

SELECTIVE PLACEMENT FACTORS/KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Applicants will be rated based on the criteria listed below:

1. Graduate degree in futures studies, strategic foresight, strategic innovation, political science, national or international security studies, strategic intelligence, government, economics, or other fields strongly related to strategic futures and national security. Preference will be given to candidates with an earned doctorate.
2. Record of research publications on key national security issues, with an emphasis on global trends, the future operational environment, informational, social, technological, political and economic long-term outlooks and the resultant future strategic implications for national security.
3. Experience in developing and educating students at the graduate level.
4. Demonstrated ability to influence policy at the strategic level through research, publication, and presentation.
5. Experience in participating in and leading a strategic futures community of practice.
6. Demonstrated skill at presenting research and analysis to senior leaders and officials, including the ability to engage senior leaders in specific research-based discussion and provide sound recommendations concerning strategic futures and the implications for national security.
7. Depth and breadth of professional service inside and outside the candidate's organization, specifically at the national level.
8. Active involvement in professional networks relevant to strategic futures.
