The South Texas Veterans Health Care System (STVHCS) is a highly-specialized teaching hospital affiliated with the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio (UTHSCSA). The STVHCS is a dual campus healthcare system consisting of Audie L. Murphy Campus San Antonio, Texas, Kerrville Campus - rural secondary medical center in Kerrville, Texas. STVHCS is one of the largest and most complex 1a health care systems in the nation with a Polytrauma Center (one of only five in the nations).

Duties:
In addition to observance of Federal national and local regulatory, policy, and accreditation requirements governing this Health Care System, this position encompasses the following examples of responsibilities overseen by their Section Chief. Staff physicians require appropriate time mapping and resources to ensure they are empowered to meet expected proficiencies in administration, clinical practice, education, and research.

Administrative Duties:
HR: Maintaining VA training requirements, and upkeep of credentials, state license and DEA Registration required

Staff Management: Participate in the FPPE/OPPE process. Adheres to employee health requirements. Participate in Clinical Pertinence Reviews.

Time/Leave Management: Adherence to tour of Duties, timely requests for leave in VISTA and for clinic cancelations

Clinical Duties: The staff physician is expected to remain privileged and practicing in their specialty field. The exact privileges and procedures for a particular provider will be approved by the Professional Standards Board. All physicians must meet the following standards:
Patient Care: Provide patient care that is compassionate, appropriate, and effective for the promotion of health, prevention of illness, treatment of disease, and care at the end of life.

Medical/Clinical Knowledge: Demonstrate knowledge of established and evolving biomedical, clinical and social sciences, and the application of their knowledge to patient care and the education of others. Clinical Judgment: Ability to use scientific evidence and methods to investigate, evaluate, and improve patient care.

Interpersonal & Communication Skills: Demonstrate interpersonal and communication skills that enable them to establish and maintain professional relationships with patients, families, and other members of the health care team.

Professionalism: Demonstrate behaviors that reflect a commitment to continuous professional development, ethical practice, and understanding and sensitivity to diversity, and a responsible attitude toward their patients, their profession

Systems-Based Practice: Demonstrate both an understanding of the contexts and systems in which health care is provided, and the ability to apply this knowledge to improve optimizing health care.

Practitioners are expected to show effectiveness in teaching, monitor and coordinate educational activities, and comply with necessary trainee supervision.

Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 8:00am to 4:30pm (Full time)

Qualifications

Basic Requirements:

  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
  • Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
  • Completion of residency training, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.
  • Physical requirements outlined below.
Preferred Experience:
Successfully completed a fellowship training program in Sleep Medicine or Board Certified in Sleep Medicine via the alternate pathway.

Faculty Experience in Sleep Fellowship Training Program

Reference: VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-2 Physician Qualification Standard. This can be found in the local Human Resources Office.

Physical Requirements: : Moderate lifting (15-44 pounds), Light carrying (under 15 pounds), Reaching above shoulder, use of fingers, Both hands required, Walking (6 hours), Standing (6 hours), Repeated bending (2-4 hours), Both eyes required, Ability to distinguish basic colors, Ability to distinguish shades of colors, Hearing (Aid permitted), Mental/Emotional stability, Ability to perform privileges, Independently performs, Cognitive stability.
