Summary

The position is located in Facility Management Service at the VA Montana Healthcare System, Fort Harrison, MT. Incumbent of this position performs routine and specialized tasks in completing sanitation duties in the office building as well as critical/sterile care areas such as Special Procedures, SPD, PAD, and the Operating Rooms. Work is regularly performed by hand and heavy-powered (industrial-type) cleaning equipment such as scrubbers, buffers, spray washers, and vacuum cleaners.

Some of the duties for the position of Housekeeping Aid are as follows:
-Complete thorough sanitizing and decontamination of all movable furniture: stools, instruments tables, patient operating tables, lifts and kick bucket
-Complete thorough sanitizing and decontamination of all stationary/fixed surfaces to include ceilings, walls, floors, surgical lamps, monitors, vents, and panels
-Complete cleaning of restrooms, following aseptic methods and using a variety of cleaning supplies and equipment
-Clean floors by vacuuming, sweeping, mopping, washing, refinishing, restoring, shampooing, and stain removal. Surface cleaning of porcelain, glass, mirrors, walls, window partitions, and furniture
-Perform a full range of cleaning duties in an office building floor or critical/sterile care areas and carry out a variety of custodial duties that involve the handling, moving, and controlling of heavy powered equipment
-Remove stains from a wide variety of surfaces, using an assortment of special cleaning and sanitizing Solutions
-Work on ladders and scaffolds to perform tasks such as washing ceiling fixtures and room partitions as needed
-Restock dispensers with required supplies such as toilet tissue, towels, soap, paper towels, etc.
-Move and arrange furniture, as needed to accomplish cleaning tasks

Promotion Potential: The selectee may be promoted to the full performance level without further competition when all regulatory, qualification, and performance requirements are met. Selection at a lower grade level does not guarantee promotion to the full performance level.

Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 1:30pm - 10:00pm with 2 consecutive weekdays off, plus 7:00am - 3:30pm, Saturdays and Sundays
NOTE: Candidates must be willing to work weekends, irregular work hours and extended hours. The candidate must be willing to be assigned to other related services and/or locations, if necessary.

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C.

SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. The potential eligibles are then rated against the remainder of the Job Elements:

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: The physical demands of the position require some heavy lifting of equipment and materials and the movement of furniture (up to 50 pounds). Continuous walking, standing, stooping, bending, lifting, and arduous physical effort are required in the performance to tasks assigned.

Occasionally, moderate to heavy physical effort is used in moving, setting-up, and working from ladders and scaffolds. The use of heavy powered equipment (wall washers, industrial-type buffers) is required on a regular and reoccurring basis.

Usually work is performed indoors, in areas which normally have adequate heat, light, and ventilation. Occasionally, the worker is exposed to skin irritations from strong cleaning solutions used in stripping floors, etc., cuts and bruises.

The worker is exposed to dirt and unpleasant odors, vibration from heavy equipment, and skin irritations from cleaning solutions. Care is required to avoid all potential injuries by following safety standards and procedures on a day-to-day basis.

Employee must be able to read and follow written instructions. Safety rules must be adhered to. Must be able to follow guidelines set forth in the policies and procedures manuals within FMS regarding chemical spills, environmental care, hazardous waste, sharps, trash removal and the proper handling of contaminated and soiled linen. The employee needs to be knowledgeable in the proper use of PPE. The employee will work in potentially infectious areas and should follow all Infection Control Guidelines.

Additional information

Receiving Service Credit or Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. VA may offer newly-appointed Federal employee's credit for their job-related non-federal experience or active duty uniformed military service. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave. Such credit must be requested and approved prior to the appointment date and is not guaranteed.
