What General Information Do I Need To Know About This Position?

This is a term appointment for which all qualified applicants with or without Federal status may apply and be considered. Appointment to this position, however, will not convey permanent status in the Federal service and will be for a period not to exceed 13 months with possible extensions up to a total of 4 years without further competition.

Salary: $61,218 (Step 01) to $79,586 (Step 10); NOTE: First time hires to the Federal Government are typically hired at the Step 01.

Duties

Help

As a Geographer within the Wetlands & Aquatic Research Center (WARC), some of your specific duties will include:

  • Serves in a project lead capacity for geospatial (RS/GIS) study projects conducted at WARC. Designs and manages gepgraphic projects and studies, and works independently to provide a greater understanding of the effects of evnvironmental perturbations and restoration efforts in estuaries and associated wetlands. Develops, builds, creates and maintains spatial datasets for a uniform working environment pertinent to project goals for large geographic areas.
  • Creates, compiles, and synthesizes a wide variety of geospatial data creation, interpretation and analysis techniques, with an emphasis in eCognition to develop, design, and assist in large scale mapping projects, applications, ecological modeling efforts, research studies, and decision-making efforts.
  • Coordinates dissemination of spatial information developed and maintained for WARC projects throuhg communication with cooperative partners, other Federal agencies, universities, state and local governments, and the private sector using a variety of media, including publications, presentations and the internet.
  • Represents WARC at national and regional meetings and on committees as an official representative of the WARC, promulgating information about USGS programs and projects to other agencies and organizations through presentations, workshops and meetings. Develops new projects in area of expertise and developments and implements outreach opportunities.
  • Operates a government owned vehicle as an incidental driver.

Are There Any Special Requirements For This Position?

  • Because this position requires travel for official business, the selectee will be required to apply for a charge card within 30 calendar days of appointment. For GS-11

In addition to the basic education requirement as stated above, applicants must meet one of the following to qualify for the GS-11 level:

**Ph.D. or equivalent graduate degree in geography or other directly related field of study or 3 years of progressively higher-level graduate education (54 semester hours, 81 quarter hours or the equivalent) leading to a Ph.D. in geography or other directly related field of study if it provided the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to do the work of the position to be filled.

**OR one year of appropriate professional experience in geography that is equivalent to at least the GS-09 level in the Federal service.

Examples of such experience may include: 1) locating, examining, evaluating and selecting, from a variety of source materials, information for use in depicting the location and standardizing the nomenclature of physical and humane features on a map, chart or in a gazetteer; 2) determining the distribution of like phenomena (e.g., deciduous vegetation or precipitation) over Eastern U.S., or comparing the distribution of two or three different kinds of phenomena, e.g., deciduous vegetation and precipitation; 3) providing assistance to a higher-graded researcher on small, self-contained studies. Examples 1 & 2 included independent responsibility for small projects or significant segments of larger projects. Discrepancies may have arisen in source materials. Judgment was used to resolve the less difficult problems; a higher-level authority resolved the most difficult problems. Work was carried out in accordance with established procedures and criteria. For example 3, extensive and precise instructions were provided and the project leader was readily available for consultation and guidance.
