The Motion Picture, Broadcasting and Recorded Sound Division is responsible for the acquisition, processing, preservation, duplication and reference servicing of the audio and motion picture film collections of the Library. These collections consist of motion pictures, magnetic tape (audio and video); disc, wire, cylinder recordings; and associated catalogs, indices, scripts, contracts, agreements and logs pertaining to or describing the collections. The Division maintains fully equipped laboratories to handle the recording, preservation and duplication of these materials.
This position is located within the Recorded Sound Section, Motion Picture, Broadcasting and Recorded Sound, Collections and Services Directorate, Library Services.
All librarians must meet the requirements for professional education in library science or possess equivalent experience and education.
A. Completion of 1 full academic year of graduate study in library science in an accredited college or university, in addition to completion of all work required for a bachelor's degree;
or
B. A total of at least 5 years of a combination of college-level education, training, and experience. To qualify on this basis, the applicant must establish conclusively that the education, training, and experience provided knowledge and understanding of the theories, principles, and techniques of professional librarianship; a knowledge of literature resources; and the knowledge and abilities essential for providing effective library and information services.
In addition to meeting the basic entry qualification requirements, applicants must have directly related education and/or specialized experience.
GS- 9:
Two full years of progressively higher level graduate education or master's in library science or equivalent graduate degree, e.g., LL.B. or J.D., related to the position.

Performs original and copy cataloging of published and unpublished sound recordings and related materials on a variety of levels in machine-readable cataloging format where the bibliographic characteristics of the material are relatively easy to determine and cataloging decisions are made within established standards. Upgrades preliminary records created by technicians or converted from external databases to full MARC cataloging records. The material is such that assignment of subject headings can be determined relatively easily by comparing the content with a standard list of terms.
Resolves routine problems reported by catalogers promptly and independently, involving the supervisor on only the more difficult problems.
Searches entries in appropriate machine and manual catalogs. Assigns data elements to bibliographic and inventory records as required by the automated system in use.
Analyzes material to determine its relationship to the existing collections, for proper main entry, and the need for added entries. Determines subject content and assigns to the catalog entry one of several subject headings. Establishes new personal and corporate names and uniform titles, with appropriate cross-references for inclusion in the name authority file. Establishes and recommends new subject headings, with appropriate cross-references for inclusion in the subject authority file. Revises cataloging records, bibliographic records, authority records and inventory entries.
Performs content designation of newly created and updated bibliographic and name authority records, supplying tags, indicators, sub-field codes, delimiters, fixed and variable field information. Performs research in relevant print reference sources, in online databases, in the world wide web, and/or in the collections of the library.
Resolves problems and inconsistencies in the cataloging process. Analyses and organizes standard subject data relating to sound recordings in order to determine its relationship or relevance to the item in hand. Information is obtained, analyzed, and organized using standard rules, guidelines, sources and established techniques and practices. May participate in formulating plans for changes and improvements in approaches to the work.
Identifies and examines major publications and trends. Shares resources and information with colleagues and constituents. Independently establishes the necessary bibliographic controls over collected materials through the implementation of files and the development of automated databases. May prepare reports, analyses, and other documents related to information and research efforts.
Assists in the implementation of prepared training courses and materials. Assists in developing, coordinating, and/or conducting training programs involving the computer cataloging and inventorying of sound recordings. Prepares instructional guides, information packets, and other resource materials. Provides training to technicians, temporary staff, and interns in the unit as assigned. Researches training needs as new functions are added and changes in existing procedures take place.
