Duties

Help

Assistant U.S. Attorneys litigate complex matters with a high degree of autonomy across a wide variety of subject matter areas. Independence, initiative and the ability to handle multiple case obligations while generating a high-quality work product is critical.

The incumbent will be expected to litigate on behalf of the government, a wide variety of civil cases including employment discrimination, medical malpractice, constitutional claims against federal officials, personal injury, bankruptcy, collection, foreclosure, health care fraud, procurement fraud, prisoner litigation, challenges to federal agency actions, and subpoena and summons enforcement litigation. Assigned cases will include matters pending in United States District Court.

In affirmative investigations, the incumbent will be expected to work closely with case agents and investigators to develop and pursue effective enforcement actions, including in the areas of health care fraud and drug diversion.

Responsibilities will increase and assignments will become more complex as your training and experience progress.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • You must be a United States Citizen or National.
  • Applicants must possess a J.D. Degree, be an active member of the bar (any U.S. jurisdiction) and have at least 3 years post-J.D. legal or other relevant experience.
Preferred Qualifications:
The successful candidate should possess substantial civil litigation experience that includes responsibility for all aspects of discovery, trial and appeals, superior writing skills, good judgment, broad-based knowledge of civil practice and procedures, excellent communication and courtroom skills, strong interpersonal skills and a demonstrated capacity to function with minimum guidance in a highly demanding environment.

In addition, applicants must exhibit the ability to work in a supportive and professional manner with other attorneys, paralegals, support staff and client agencies.

Applicants will be expected to do their own legal research and writing and will be effectively self-sufficient in preparing day-to-day correspondence and pleadings. Applicants must be computer literate and adept at learning new computer programs.

Salary Information: Assistant United States Attorney's pay is administratively determined based, in part, on the number of years of professional attorney experience. The range of basic pay is $57,012 to $138,790

Residency Requirements: Assistant United States Attorneys generally must reside in the district to which he or she is appointed or within 25 miles thereof. See 28 U.S.C. 545 for district-specific information.
